Bringing the Eve market to GW2

I have recently just started trading in Guild Wars 2 using concepts similar to what is in use on the Eve markets. The GW2 market is surprisingly similar: it's still a Buy/Sell order system, with similar "shortcuts" to buy from the lowest seller, or sell to the lowest buyer. The main differences are:

  • Global market, completely location-independent
  • Fixed taxes on sell orders: 5% at the time the order is placed, 10% at the time it sells. No taxes or fees on buy orders.
  • No order price updating. You have to cancel the order (and lose the 5% fee, if it's a sell order).
  • No price statistics are available. Some 3rd party sites offer them, but I've found the accuracy questionable at best.
  • Less streamlined/intuitive interface than Eve's.

I've been able to make some nice profits by just buying low and selling high (outbidding all buy orders, undercutting all sell orders), but I feel that there's more potential there. Anyone else have any experience with the GW2 market, or if you don't, any thoughts on how it could be capitalized upon?

I tried it back when the game was launched. But it was impossible to make profit since the buy and sell was too close. I haven't given it a try since that. Mainly because I only play GW2 to relax and whack some stuff.

I actually managed to lose money on it since there was a hidden tax (the 10% tax was hidden at the beginning) which meant that a narrow profit turned into a loss.

Overall I was very dissapointed about it, and the economy will never be like EVE's since the fundamental gameplay is very different.

without pricing history, you can attempt to use an alt to indicate in forums that a nerf to drop rate, or other scarcity causing event will impact whatever you are selling on market for a mark-up and maybe get some hits.

buy low sell high works out if you know what you are doing, as in tradeskill items that people will want to buy, and won't want to "farm", but that is always kinda risky, and setting a higher price can be tricky if people undercut you and a large que builds because to take down an order, you lose the 5% list tax (that is aside from the 10% sales tax, iirc).

Eve's market is just soooo much better because markets differ in regions, meaning venture matketeers can make money just in travelling.... whereas GW has an instantly accessible worldwide market. I suppose magic does that.

A GW2 trader shared a list several weeks ago of items that he found profitable in general for buying and reselling, since the demand for them was high, regardless of pricing, but i couldnt find the link they shared. I think its on the GW2 forums somewhere, but am at work, and no time to peruse.

Good Luck.

As you guys have pointed out, the GW2 market is Eve's market "lite" edition. I have found several items that have a wide enough difference between buy and sell prices that I was able to make a neat profit, and I will be looking into possibly doing some crafting in order to turn cheap materials into valuable sellable stuff.

The mind-games are a good point, Sab, though I wouldn't trust any "profitable item" guide if I saw one. If I can see it, plenty of others can as well, which ensures it is not very profitable.

i played it quite a while... raised a Elementalist to 80 only to learn that all maps beyond lvl 70 where boringly dangerous to her. Then I started raising a Guardian but faded out of the game as i never last long in theme park games. Will return sometime, though. It's a pretty beautiful game and it can be quite fun, if even for the sillyness of herding baby crabs and feeding chicken amongst other glorious deeds... Lol

here is the guide, even if you don't trust it, it was written long enough ago to have faded into obscurity if you wanna try it out. I have not yet, and as has already been mentioned might be a terrible idea... haha
