Need advice : Burning Down the Hive

I am trying to run one of the missions in the Epic Mission Arc - Burning Down the Hive

In the second part of the mission there are a lot of drones and 2 of them webbed me (I think that's what you call it). I tried to run it in my Incursus and barely escaped with my ship on fire. I fitted out a Catalyst and lost it. I can't manage to stay out of reach of the webbing drones. What do I need to do differently?

kill them first. upon warpin, start burning away as fast as you can (kite them) while you start killing them with rails. Provided that they can't get into orbit, the transversal will stay low (and thus they'll stay easy to kill).

Once they go down, the rest shouldn't be too hard to keep at range.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

OP are you using an Afterburner on your ship?

Yes, I did have an afterburner and I was running it for all it was worth.

Thanks to a generous in game donation I will be buying another catalyst when I can log in again later, and I'll give it another try.

yea that's a fun mission to fly. if i recall correctly, the drones not only web and scramble you, but also orbit relatively fast and relatively far away, so that blasters may not have the range and rails may not have the tracking to deal with them effectively(although i am not sure).
the safest way to deal with them is probably drones of your own. an algos with a solid tank and 4-5 hobgoblins should be enough.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Yep, Burning Down the Hive sucks -- no two ways about it. I managed it in one try, in a Tristan, using the famous Monty Python philosophy of "Run away! Run away!" Go toward them until they begin to aggro, then do a 180 and fly away, fast as you can. At some point, usually, you will get out of their range; then you turn toward them again, kill what you can, 180 and fly away. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The Tristan was a hot, smoking-into-structure mess by the time it was over, but I was not popped. Drones help a little. I can now actually re-do the SoE arc and I look forward to running Burning Down the Hive with 3 months of experience under my belt.

Good luck! You can do it!

For what it's worth as a fellow new player, I used this guide to finish the mission: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Burning_Down_the_Hive

Eve Uni has a great overall guide for the epic arc too, which I used as a reference: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/The_Blood-Stained_Stars

I was in a Destroyer (Coercer) so my experience might be different than someone in a Frigate though.

As a heads up, Chasing Shadows is tough (I was able to solo, but it was difficult), and I had to ask for help in Arnon local to finish Our Man Dagan. Myself and another new pilot were able to 2-man it with some effort. I found orbiting at 500m for both Chasing Shadows and Our Man Dagan really helped take down the bigger ships.

Best of luck!

Take time to observe the positions of the drones. They will be in two groups and you need to make sure that you only get aggro from the nearest group. Kite them away from the other group and pick off the Strain drones first - they're the webbers/scrammers. When you've killed all the first group go after the others, again prioritising the Strains.

Thanks for the advice everyone! It took a few "tactical retreats" and another flaming trip to the repair shop but I finally finished it.

I was just complaining to my corp-mates about this quest. Mainly because up to this quest, the whole arc was super easy. There were no problems, and then *BAM* drones with webifiers and warp disruptors. WTH? I stupidly lost two ships, and was only able to recover some of the fittings from one of them because it took me too long to fit out a new ship. I know that I should have been prepared for anything, but it was a real shock in comparison to the quest line up to that point.

Thank you for the links to the guides Vomar, I will have to check out if there are anymore gotcha's coming up on the quest line.
