Still working on this idea, but this is what I have so far...

The question was ask a while back,(Last Alliance Tournament) “What if there was an advantage to flying in formation?” This is my answer. I call it a “Unit”. As we have now, Fleet/Wing/Squad, I would like to add the Unit below the Squad. A Unit would be made up of 5 ships (two Units per Squad). A Unit of five ships will be locked into a visual formation. This Unit will be put together much like T3 ships are. One ships would be in charge of Defense (tank), one over Electronics (ECM), one Engineering (cap/resources between ships in the Unit), one Offensive (shooting), and one Propulsion (Navigation). All five ships must be the same type (class), ie. all five are T1 cruisers. I don’t see any problem with the Unit being made up of larger ships, as long as they are all the same type. I feel this Unit should be able to hit well above it’s class! Player skill should really boost the Unit’s attributes. Five skilled players in a Unit should be death to the blob, whereas five noob players in the same set of ships should only be marginally better than the same five individual ships. Each ship should have to declare it’s role in the Unit. To get your bonuses, the all five ships must be online. the propulsion ships in the Unit must actually fly the Unit/formation through the fight. Almost a first person feel.

Each ship can use all of It’s own slots and resources (ie. cap/cpu/pg) for It’s declared role. From inside the Unit each ship uses it own resources (ie. number of high medium, and low slots as well as it’s own cap, cpu, pg, cargo bay). Each ship in the Unit must lock it’s own targets

Once the Unit is formed, it should show up on the overview as one entity. Other players shooting at this Unit should only have to lock one thing. When the Unit dies, all five ships are lost. From the outside, the the Unit is a combination of all five ships. (ie. ehp is a combination of all five ships in the Unit, based on the modules running on the defensive ship). This ship formation is done in the station or in space. When players want to create a Unit it is it is done through a Unit “fleet” invite (from the Squad Commander/Unit Leader) to a specific role in the Unit. A squad can have 2 Unit Leaders.

I know there is a lot more to lay out with this idea, but I think this should get the idea started.
