.......as he has fallen so far from "Apollo 13". I mean really. A car racing movie ? Seriously ??

Edit: Invalid link. See post below.

And you know you are in for trouble when there are no less than FIVE studio logos before the trailer starts.

EDIT: One would think he would distance himself from anything to do with cars after "Gung Ho".

Yeah, that's weird. I copied the link when I was directly on the page and nowhere else.

They have been static on that site since 1995. Just strange.

Maybe they edited a change on the page and it changed the article number.

Done right, it could be done.
It's a bit niche and out of our usual track.* There's an awful lot of complexity going on in auto racing; far, far more than meets the eye. It'll take both a talented director AND a really good script to make it worthwhile. Ron Howard may just be able to manage it, if he can rise to his old form.

*Heh.

Well, Tony Scott was able to make "Days of Thunder" at least look interesting. Ron Howard is just so.....visually bland. Even for his "Grinch" movie Ugh he could think of nothing but imitating Tim Burton's production design.

The Grinch movie reeked of 'design by committee.' Don't know that it's true, but it looked like a committee trying to capture Geisel's inimitable look. I personally lost huge amounts of respect for Howard's integrity when he weasled the widow Geisel into allowing him to do the movie.

Slimy or not, though, he's got skills. I could see how a flat 'documentary style' looking movie could be turned into something interesting, maybe by allowing skulduggery to sneak in around the edges until what started out looking like a 'day in the life' starts showing signs of unsavory activities, tense situations, and moral ambiguity corroding the 'wholesome' race scene.

Idea being, don't tell the viewer what they're seeing, allow them to pick it up from context.

That might be a bit too subtle for Howard, though.

Thinking about it, I believe he actually accomplished this with "A Beautiful Mind".

That was a good movie, but he took a lot of liberty in representing the guy's life. In other words, he invented events that had never, ever happened, just to make the story more dramatic. Not very cool to fictionalize, IMO, when you're representing a real person's life to the public. Now I wonder how much of Apollo 13's storyline was just Ron Howard fictionally-enhanced drama.

That would be interesting to find out. It was such a terrifying incident, they probably did not have to do much enhancing.

Yup.
Thanks to that movie, John Nash became one of my wife's celebrity crushes.

Fair point, though John Nash doesn't seem to mind - Not based on some of the speaking events my wife has stalk... erm, attended.

According to people who ought to know (my parents, both involved in the early days of the space program*), Apollo 13 was quite close.

I sometimes wish the opposite from certain directors, I would love to see for instance, Mario Salieri working on a big budget film that is NOT XXX. His "style" is so well known other new emerging directors try to emulate him. He really makes those movies something more than a 5 minute affair.

To this day I am addicted to chiaroscuro scenes in porn/mainstream movies because of him. Most Adult films these days are raw unprocessed IN YOUR FACE flesh. No lightning, photometry, proper angles, just GONZO obliterations over and over.

Some of his movies had good stories, solid directing (I mean it, making porn actors ACT must be a tough job) and he actually has a solid way of rating actors for their performances in his webpage

Also having a free uncoded XXX european channel in your decoding box , after the initial shock back in the day, makes you start looking at them from a diff angle. I also find European productions far superior to USA ones in terms of casting.

I also wrote all of this just for the fun of it (I also enjoy Apple Pie)

First theres no more flat bottom because of "potential cavity" , then we are forced to tone down the CC ... then computer overdrives ... damn

You just reminded me of that awesome Anime, about lethal racing, where suddenly one guy just blows up in spectacular fashion during a race and then everyone´s appetite for the race winded down, as the narrator implied perhaps watchers were just waiting for a glorious accident/death to happen and once sated the whole fandom died down.

What was the name of that anime? I loved it! ...

Although I wasn't born during the era of Senna, Prost and Co, I can relate to this trend on many levels. This has been the case for pretty much every racing class of cars. Just three years ago, GT1 cars were fire breathing, burp spouting monsters but today they have all been phased out for mere GT3 cars. For example, The FIA GT competition isn't as awesome as it used to be and it shows in the steep decline of professional racing drivers. Almost everyone participating this year is either a factory driver or some rich dude. I'm left with the Japanese super GT as it's the only real thing left that I know of.
