EVE New Citizens Q&A

So, after banging my head against the keyboard for hours last night trying the find the gravimetric signature in the exploration career mission, I found it this morning. I bookmarked the location, then went through the gate and found the asteroid site. I was excited to see so many minerals I've never even heard of! So excited I forgot to bookmark before flying back to the base. Ooops. I didn't remember to look for the cargo with the certificate inside. The agent wasn't having it.

No prob, I thought, since I remembered to make a book mark. I flew back to my bookmark and found nothing there. No acceleration gate. I'm screwed. Or am I?

Do I have to do a complete rescan to get back to the site, or is there an easier way? Either way, I think (hope) I've learned a lesson. Sometimes Eve is too pretty!

So, for future knowledge, will I be able to scout out a site in my exploration frigate, bookmark it, then come back with a combat ship? That was to be my isk-making career strategy.

Entering may in some cases trigger it so yes don't warp to it just bookmark the 100% hit from your scanner window. Having said that you don't NEED a special scanning ship in most cases, certainly not in high sec, you don't need special sister launchers, probes or grav rigs at all. And given the fact that roaming around systems trying to find a site sucks if you have to move two ships with one character it's just not worth it.

Would you have an alt then it might make sense to put him in an orca so you can swap ships&fits, drop off loot/ore and make use of the Orca's gang links.

The problem is....even if you start a new trial now and skip aura and don't train any skills...you will still carry over and use yoru knowledge you gained from previous character. You will NEVER be a true new player anymore as you have knowledge about how it works.

New character =/= New citizen.

The tutorial signatures are an excellent place to practice your scanning techniques, so I recommend watching a few vids or reading a few guides and practicing there for a bit. They are general pretty strong and easier to find than most signatures, and there are tons of them and they never run out so they make good practice targets.

Make sure you train all of the astrometrics skill books that you get from the tutorial to at least level 3, that will help you quite a bit. Also, don't forget to move your probes on all three axes (sometimes signatures are above and below the x and y axis) and use the shift and alt keys while moving probes to make things much easier on yourself (hold **** to adjust strength of all probes, or to move all probes at once. Hold alt and move a probe to pull probes towards or away from a center point).

Once you finish the exploration tutorial you should get an exploration frigate as a reward which will also greatly improve your scanning ability. Once you get some drone skills you will be able to clear most high sec sites (all radar and mag) without even leaving your exploration frigate. If high sec exploration is high on your list of things you want to do, I'd work on those drone skills after getting all of your basic skills (archeology, salvaging, hacking). Afterwards you can skill up to a battlecruiser to do those tough complexes, but in my experience some of the 4/10 sites can be quite difficult for a new player (and even some experienced players).

I think you misunderstood. It did go smoothly. Only I forgot to pick up my certificate. I wanted to know if I could go back to the acceleration gate to the same site -- the answer was no.

Another question: I tried immediately after I received all the good advice (thanks again!) and this time I couldn't pick up the required grav signal. Did I just miss it, or is it possible there wasn't a new grav signal in the system where I received the mission? If there is the possibility the signal I scanned earlier might not be replaced by a new training grav site, I call foul. That means you only get one chance to screw up! Hopefully I just missed it, but I tried several times, docking into the Military School port each time before going out again.

After a few hours (!) practice, I think I've got it down. But my question remains: will the system I received the mission in always provide the appropriate training site? If I left the system for another and found a grav site would I have been able to complete the mission?

So, am I screwed? The mission spawned the original grav site where I forgot to grab the certificate. I guess it doesn't matter too much. I can always practice probe scanning on my own, now that I know how to do it. But if that's the case, I'll miss out on the free astrometic pinpointing skill book. 500K I'll have to spend. A mining I will go!

... possibly because the entire purpose of the NCQA forum is to tell people how to do things with limited sp allotments and give them some idea of what they should be doing and how to get there.

Or I guess it could be a giant sinister conspiracy to secretly mock rookies with their inadequacy like you're suggesting, which hundreds of us have put hours and hours of out free time into maintaining.

Both of those are clearly equally likely and believing the latter doesn't make you paranoid, oversensitive, and cartoonishly insecure at all.
