Read the big red section at the top of the page.

Linkage

I've browsed a few different MMO forums and haven't found anything being referenced from what the above warning calls "postings to fantasy, role player game sites". Apparently, wherever the threats are originating, OSU is taking them seriously.

Oh boy Ohio State, ranked 11 places under DeVry University for Academics.

At least they beat University of Phoenix ... by 5.

Pretty sure due to the low-brow patronage of Ohio State EVE has nothing to worry about =P

Now with 100% less Troll.

*sigh*
The world today...

Stupidity, meet Over-Reaction. Over-Reaction, shake hands with Stupidity.

Not you, Grayson. Just the 'OMG the Sky Is Falling' crowd - they're at it again. Egged on, no doubt, by the 'We know how to run your life better than you do' crowd and backed up by the 'Blame everyone' and 'If it bleeds, it leads' crowds.

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Haven't seen anything else on this, other than Fox News running a blurb saying the FBI is involved and trying to find the source of the threats. But ya, my guess is someone got pissed and posted something like "I'll woop your ass in the cafeteria," akin to some kind of meet me after school kind of threat. But who knows.

They've pulled in their horns somewhat now. the current red-banner reads:
OSU wrote:
Ohio State is working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to address an online threat to campus. We are investigating and have increased our security presence.

Previously, it read:
OSU wrote:
The Ohio State University Police Division has been informed of postings to fantasy, role player game sites which reference a potential public safety threat of violence focused on a 'cafeteria' today on 'The Ohio State University campus.' We continue to investigate and are taking these seriously to the point of having extra police and security presence on and around campus dining facilities. We have the assistance of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. This information is being sent so that the university community is aware and to ask assistance in reporting any related suspicious persons or activity today or in the future.

ahhhh ! i must confess ..i was a tad confused ... thanks for clearing that one up for me

obviously yet another typical kneejerk reaction

EDIT :
But having said that ...given the recent killings at various american campus`s and schools across the US recently i`m not really suprised that the campus overeacted ... if they hadnt at least seen to be doing something and something untoward did occour then fingers probably would be wagging in thier direction .

not saying its right or wrong but ...its the old saying ...better safe than sorry .

As a parent myself, and someone who has family @ the OSU campus, I would much rather they overreact than wave it off and we have another national tragedy on our hands.

Problem being the 'cry wolf' issue.

When organizations cry wolf, people stop taking them seriously - or - develop anxiety and fear reactions which inhibit their ability to live their lives.

Neither is desirable.

Mostly all true, but I'd be real nervous if I were a District Attorney or a Sheriff at the moment.

Pretty big and disturbing headlines indeed.

It's all about risk management. Knowing about a threat and failing to act on it in time can bite you in the ass if something DOES happen.

That "Scully" pilot who literally kissed the Hudson River with a jet was an extreme specialist in Risk Management. An horrifically boring and tedious job, but kudos for those like him that can take that to a near Zen-like level of graceful perfection.
