Shame I heard he was a decent science fiction author. I remember a PC Gamer review of EVE Online mentioning being able to live the Iain M Banks dream - BBC News

Sad news indeed. Sad Let's hope he outlives the prognosis or at least goes as painlessly / peacefully as possible.

Really sad.

I've only read a few of his short stories though.

Bad week for this as even Roger Ebert's cancer has returned..........

Very sad on a number of levels.
Much too young to be passing on.
A huge loss for the literary world. At not-yet 60, he'd have had his best writing years ahead of him.

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Messes with my head every time I remember that.
Who knows what wonders he might have given us, had he lived a more full life?

Nor is he the only one.

I wonder if he ever planned to end the Culture series with a bang....

I never got around to finishing more than a few of his books, I feel a loss I will never know what the history of the Algabraeist was...

At least he got to see an unfinished work print of "Blade Runner".

edit: (Sorry, beyond those few short stories I'm not that versed in Iain. But this is a part of the genre's history, that's for sure.)

Some disrespectful comments were removed from this thread.

There's a very good reason why we don't discuss politics here; Please don't cross that line.
