after trying number of combat variations I got a noctis today with a swarm of 5 salvage drones + 4 salvager I \ tractor beam I

my corp members did number of L4 missions and I cleared the room after them. was very fun and I enjoyed myself.

anyway number of questions,
1. anyone got a list of good skills for salvaging?
2. what are a good missions (agents) to do while I fly a noctis and there are no mission fleets running on my corp? distribution will do? will it require fighting in it?
3. I'm thinking about mixing the salvaging skills with a secondary profession maybe trading, do you think it will work well? if so any list of decent trading skills?
4. I heard people are scanning around for abandoned wrecks, our corp is around 0.6\0.5 areas.. does it worth to run around looking for wrecks or just do missions instead?
5. for missions, raising social skills worth the time? or not even bother?

thanks!

EDIT:

I still got free stats remap, it is currently set for max perception etc.. (spaceship command + weapon systems) will it be beneficial to train spaceship command V \ ORE Industrial V and then remap the skills so it will be faster to train support skills for salvaging + trade skills?

EDIT 2:
I'm still in the game while writing this thread and though on first thought trading seems fine the area in which my corp is settled is filled with tons of distribution hubs so I kinda did over 20 in less then 40 minutes so I'm thinking that in my current location and corp this kind of mission will benefit me more then trading.
possible to distribution mission run in noctis? better get dedicated ship? and mission ship with drone capability ?

1. Salvaging, and skills to pilot a Noctis well (MWD, capacitor, etc.) Core Competency Standard certificate is always a good idea. I'd recommend training for a least a battlecruiser so you can create wrecks. Big smile

A battlecruiser is a medium-sized hull, and most use the same weapons and fittings as cruisers, so you can pilot both with the same skills. Medium-sized hulls comprise the majority of all ships in EVE.

2. Well Security (combat) missions if you plan to salvage anything. Level 3 and level 4 are good for salvaging, but no reason why you can't salvage level 1 and level 2 even. You will need a combat ship for combat missions. Courier and Mining missions are boring in my opinion, but do whatever you enjoy.

The Noctis is very slow moving and warping. It isn't ideal for courier missions.

Great fast haulers are Blockade Runners (tech 2 Transports = Blockade Runners & Deep Space Transports), but if you have less than 1608 m3 to move, a fast to train and fast moving frigate will do:

[Magnate, Hauler (1608 m3)]
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II

[empty med slot]
[empty med slot]
1MN Microwarpdrive I

[empty high slot]
Salvager I
Small Tractor Beam I

Small Cargohold Optimization I
Small Cargohold Optimization I
Small Cargohold Optimization I

3. In EVE anything is possible. Look at the skills under trading.

4. You cannot really scan or probe wrecks. You can find people in missions and "ninja" (salvage) their wrecks though. It won't make you popular, if that matters to you.

A small change in fitting to a second Magnate will do the trick too (addition of a probe launcher and two Gravity Capacitor rigs, though that will reduce the cargo).

5. If you do anything a lot, it is worth training the skills to level 5, or at least to level 4 = 80% of the ability for 17.68% of the training time of level 5. Put a priority on skills that affect all ships (core skills) followed by skills that affect many ships and make them more effective (support skills).

Personally, I train on all my mission characters:
* Connections
* Negotiations
* Social
* Security Connections (combat missions)
I currently have a character that is just finishing training them all to 5. It is on my long term plan for this character too (I have them all to level 4).

Training any skill to level 2 to start is a good idea. It typically takes under 3h, and often a lot less (depends on skill rank).

If you know what you are going to be training for the next year, then a specialized remap is best. EVEmon (and I suppose other tools) can calculate the optimal remap for you.

If you don't know what you are going to be training, then you should consider a generalized remap. Examples:

* Perception = Intelligence [24i 24p 17c 17w 17m] This is very popular, but not recommended for industry or drones.
* Perception > Intelligence [21i 27p 17c 17w 17m]
* Perception > Intelligence = Memory [21i 23p 17c 17w 21m] A bit more general than the above two, with a combat focus.
* Intelligence > Perception = Memory [23i 21p 17c 17w 21m] Most of my alts use this one.

For new characters, there are an awful lot of skills with intelligence or perception as the primary attribute, so it often makes sense to enhance intelligence and perception. How much to emphasize depends on your skill choices.

General guide of skill category for primary attribute
Intelligence: Electronics, Engineering, Mechanics, Navigation, Science
Perception: Gunnery, Missile Launcher Operation, Spaceship Command (T1)
Willpower: Spaceship Command (T2)
Memory: Corporation Management, Drones, Industry
Charisma: Leadership, Planet Management, Social, Trade

It is rarely a good idea to remap for high willpower, charisma, or memory.

I had the same general attribute mapping for about 3 years before I remapped into a specialized perception > willpower one. I find it hard to stick to a training plan.

How about combining Skills for salvaging with manufacturing Rigs and may modules, as you will get many loot modules not worth selling. You could reprocess this loot and build stuff for sell.

Having more tractor beams is generally better when you start going up in salvage skill. I personally use the 5/3 split, but I've heard of people doing the 6/2 split with the new drones

Having fun is very important! Big smile

1. (level 5 skills) Ore industrial, spaceship command, salvaging, evasive maneuvering, long range targeting, signature analysis, targeting (+multitasking 3)

other skills: afterburner or mwd skills, armor rigging for salvage tackle rigs, mechanic, hull upgrades, and shield skills, skills for sensor booster, cap skills

2. Doing missions in a noctus are bad. They lack enough carge to do level 4 distribution missions (ugh, distribution missions)

3. Trading, research, industry, PI - these will all work and things you can do while salvaging if you're in the same region

4. I've never heard of scanning for abandoned wrecks, so have no opinion

5. Social skills are good if you're focusing on getting your faction standing up, so it depends on your goal and if they're sharing missions.

If you're going to focus on the noctus skills then yes you should switch your remap. Having said that I don't think you can fly a noctus all the time unless your friends play a lot, so having the ability to do things without them is a nice option that would keep me in that remap learning to fly my own combat ships.

Distribution missions are soul crushing. If you're going to insist on doing them you need a dedicated hauler to do them. Level 4 distribution missions can go up to ~7.3k m3 which is well beyond what a noctus can fit. Pick up a racial industrial ship to do them in.

Get ORE Industrial to IV (V not necessary) and Science to V/Salvaging to V (T2 tractors and T2 salvagers). Armor Rigging to IV will give you the (expensive) option for T2 salvage rigs. Also train salvage drones to IV (V not necessary). Obviously not considering traditional fitting/navigation skills, you can figure those out on your own.

But some non-traditional skills, like Cloaking III, Astrometrics IV (with Astrometric Pinpointing/Rangefinding/Acquisition at III) would be good too - see if you can convince your L4 buddies to try exploring in some C3-C4 wormholes. You can tag along in a cloaky/probing Noctis, risking your life for some very expensive salvage. If you like salvaging, you might really like wormholes :)
