Different parts of the screen/Overview - Shortcuts or Manual clicking?

General question I have, which i've never managed to find information on - I've set my overview up, and layed out the different parts of the screen so they are efficient to use, and i'm now ready for a bit O PeeVeePee.

So I go into a FW complex, and look, an enemy ship! And its within targeting distance....

Now this is where i'm struggling - What do I click on and use for targeting? Do I manually right click on the name in overview and do it that way? Do I just use shift and click on the overview?

Right now i've targeting them, and have their targeting picture on screen - Lets say I want to set orbit since i'm against a Missile boat, do I click on their name in the overview, do I use a shortcut, do I click on their targeting picture?

What about activating/deactivating modules, do I use shorts, or do I manually click, what about overheating?

All these questions come into my mind, and i've encountered no guides thus far exploring whats best to use for quick efficient reactions - I would imagine using shortcuts being the best, but i've noticed that it sometimes doesn't register when pressed, and still doesn't answer if I should be clicking on their names in the overview when making changes, or if I should be using their targeting picture or what - So the question remains, what do you yourselves use and why?

well, to target, I hold down ctrl, and click the overview to lock on targets.

To fire, I set my weapons from F1-F8

to approach, hold down q and click on target... orbit is W.

So far that is about all the shortcuts I use.

Hope this helps :)

If you go to the escape menu in EVE you will also have a tab that shows you all the shortcuts and lets you change quite a few of them to keys that you are more comfterbale with using. As an example i changed my target key to alt instead of ctrl so i dont keep hitting the push to talk key for TS constantly Lol

I also tend to set MWD and scrams on my primary F-keys

and active tanking modules on my alt+F-keys

It's of course down to taste

The posts above me have described it well, but I'd like to share how my shortcuts are set up, as I feel my layout is semi-unique. I have all the modules mapped to the letter keys. So the top left module is "Q" then "W" then "E" and so forth. Yes, this gets rid of the orbit, approach, warp etc... But you become used to using the selected item window that way. As said above me, I too mapped my target key away from CTRL to avoid queuing up in TS, but I moved it to the big 'ole spacebar for easy access.

I wear my goggles at night.

Any spelling/grammatical errors come complimentary with my typing on a phone

There are many ways to go about controlling your ship, it's all about preference. It might be usefull to know shift-clicking a module will toggle it's overheat status. I like to use the Selected Item tab to approach/orbit/keep at range when not manually flying, and the F keys to run offensive mods. That way my left hand controls the mods while my right hand controls the flight path of the ship and overload status.

I feel Eve's PVP isn't so much about lightning-fast reactions. It's more about paying attention and doing the smart thing when presented with a conflict situation. Example: you are sitting in a safe with a BC and a ship you can't beat lands on your grid. Had you been aligned, you have more then enough time to spot the hostile and click warp. Had you not been aligned, you can have the best reaction speed in the world, your BC will still slowly turn and accellerate, giving your opponent enough time to lock you and place the kill. In my experience the smaller the engagement (frigates) the more human reaction time counts. It quickly diminishes in importance as you ship up.

It's a matter of preference and what you find works best for you. Everything can be done either solely through the mouse, through a combination of keyboard/mouse, or through mostly the keyboard.

For example:

  • Targeting: Click target in space/overview, click 'target' button in 'Selected' window, OR right click the target, and use the menu, OR hold CTRL and click the target
  • Activating modules: Click the module, OR use its hotkey: F1-F8 for first row, ALT+F1 - ALT-F8 for second row, CTRL+F1 - CTRL+F8 for third row. (You can click and drag to reorder these so you're not restricted by the high/med/low slot setup).
  • Overheating modules: Click the "overheat rack" buttons, OR click the heat segment of the module, OR hold SHIFT and click the module, OR hold SHIFT and hit any of the above shortcuts for the modules.

... Et cetera. I recommend going through the shortcut settings and finding out what the defaults are for both mouse and keyboard shortcuts, and maybe setting your own. Good luck!

From my personal experience this is a rough run down of how i run my screen during PVP.

- If i know i am about to engage someone, 'pre-fire weapons' this way i only need to click the ship in overview and locking and shooting is done.
- if not, CTRL click overview for lock.
- have overview ranging buttons defaulting to your current ships optimal and use these for any orbiting or keep ranging you do.
- I usually click for all mods, this means i take a second to look at them and do not leave reps running or make other mistakes.
- i personally organised prop and offensive mods on top set of buttons. utility middle set, tank bottom set.
- passive mods are hidden, tanking stats are shown as absolute.
- aligning out i choose something on screen so i can see where i am going.
- warping i use right click menu, or on screen so i am sure i go to right place.
- any overheating is done per module / group so that i am in control of it and do not burn stuff out.

personally i feel being disciplined in how you manage yourself during a fight is really important. small mistakes like over repping even 1 or 2 cycles can effect the outcome of fights, so try and find a method that you feel allows you the most control and total view of the situation.

at the end of the day it will largely be down to personal preference but the above is mine.

Edit: also overview tabs can be really useful, if you have one dedicated to drones, escaping, capitals etc. this can really to keep you focused and get what you want.
