Deconstructing Eve

Games are typically designed with an idea as to what the players will do. Original Eve development had a theory of how game play would progress, in some cases the theories were correct, in others not so much.

How was Eve originally intended to be played? What progression did the developers envision? Did they have an idea as to what percentage of players would choose to mine and build as opposed to missioning and fighting?

One thing I'm pretty sure of is that having the right ship with the right fit for the task that a player wanted to perform was always key. Did the original development notes theorize that this kind of ship specialization would replace character classes, and that players would stick to one or two types of craft for the most part? Or did they just intend players to enjoy the ship building process and spend time designing ships for a specific task?

Was there a progression from High > Low > Null originally coded into the game? Are there advantages to following those old progressions in todays game? I would say yes to both questions, but there is no proof that I have yet found.

How do you think the designers originally envisioned Eve? And are there advantages to trying to play that way today?

It's a sandbox. You decide how to play.

An interesting interview from 2000, it doesn't answer all you questions, but gives a flavour of where they were heading:

This one is taken from around the same time, with some more details:

Very interesting to read that, in the light of the last 13 years.

The abridged version is: EVE was to be a visually rich and mostly unexplored single shard universe where your ship was your avatar and killing other players was the ultima ratio of everything.

Obviously it has lasted 10 years in spite of its origin, rather than thanks to it. Lol

Trying to apply any kind of 'standard progression model' to EVE is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I started Highsec ganking and moved out to 0.0 as a noob, never had to grind anything aside from some incursions and sleeper sites, neither of which really felt like a grind at all.

EVE Online, PVE optional, PVP mandatory.

Highsec is owned by players now. Systems 0.5-1.0 are New Order Territory. All miners and other residents of Highsec must obey The Code. Mining without a permit is dangerous and harmful to the EVE community. See www.MinerBumping.com

I unblocked you because I figured your "tasty beverage" responses couldn't be too bad, and as a fairly subjective question all input is interesting. Then I come here and find yet another baseless, pointless, and banal Kixtal thread derailment post. Back to block with you.

Eve was originally intended to be a free for all sandbox populated by ****s so that they can be ****s to each other.

Now Eve is a sandbox populated by ****s and people who whine about people being ****s and people who want to be ****s to the ****s and whole alliances dedicated to being ****s, with a DEV team dedicated to supposedly nerfing the ****s while themselves have alts planted in those alliances that are dedicated to being ****s. We also have a group of ****s who are elected to help the other ****s figure out what really needs to be changed in game so to appease the people who whine about the ****s.

So yeah. Eve...just a bunch of ****s being ****s.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I think you have that totally wrong.

PVE optional, PVP optional

You do what you want look at all the people that just help out noobs, that trade etc. PVP isn't mandatory to enjoy this game at all.
