why/how does bumping work actually?

There is also a number of fixes CCP applied to dramatically scale down bumping. Conservation of momentum is absolutely broken (ie, doesn't work according to newtonian physics) right now, considering I can hit a stationary scorpion, while traving at 14 km/s in a vagabond, with a 100mn MWD, giving me a very comparable mass to his, and even though the vast majority of my moment is transferred to him, with me bouncing BACK the other direction a short ways, he only travels a few kilometers himself, at a low speed for a short durationg.

I still want ships to failsplode on the jita undock cause they all crash into eachother, it makes perfect sense.

You could also keep bumping as it is, cause it adds a mechanic to the game thats not only extremely usefull but also very fun to use.

100MN microwarpdrive adds a whole lot of mass to any ship.

A 100MN microwarpdrive adds 500,000,000kg to a ship.

A titan has a mass of ~2,300,000,000 kg

A typical battleship has a mass of ~100,000,000 kg.

So, a battleship using a 100MN microwarpdrive has ~600,000,000kg of mass or, put another way, just over a quarter of the mass of a titan.

Now, imagine a boat out on the water getting hit by a boat a quarter of its size going at great speed.... you'll now know why titans are impacted by battleships using microwarpdrives.

How sure are you that this formula is even applied when bumping?

Why can a frigate traveling a 100 m/s with no MWD flip a titan 90 degrees?

That's like derailing a train with a baseball bat.

Besides a MWD adding weight to a ship is not even close to realistic. it can add force by adding more speed to the existing weight but you can't make a real world comparison with a tugboat that weights 1/4th of a supertanker bumping a super tanker. It wouldn't push the tanker off its course. It would go right through the hull when you apply that much force on such a small surface.

I'm quite sure that if you hit the train on the rigth spot at the rigth time, you would derail it.

An MWD doesn't add weight. Also, weight is a measure of Force, so you're saying "It's unrealistic for an MWD to add force, but it should add force." [/Physics Pedantry mode]

MWDs add Mass. You could make an argument for it by looking squinty-eyed at relativistic mass, but the real reason for it is that MWDs (esp oversized ones) would be massively overpowered without the effects of that additional mass, and game design trumps realism every day of the week.

Tugboats use bumpers to increase the contact surface. EVE ships use shields that do the same.
