I suck at scanning

I've got Astrometrics 4, Astrometric Pinpointing 5, and the rest are below 3. Aside from the obvious stuff with Astrometric in its name is there anything else I can train up to ensure my scanning capabilities take me from suck to mediocre? I somewhat don't believe I will ever become awesome so mediocre is fine by me.

covops skill

you want astro 5, rangefinding 4, pinpointing 4, acquisition 4 as a minimum if you spend a lot of time scanning.
the order of priority for the support skills (IMO) is:
1 pinpointing
2 rangefinding
3 acquisition

taking them to 5, astro 5 should be first, then covops 5, then the supports in the above order.

Interesting.

Is that for ship requirements or for cloaking requirements? I can use Cloaking II units.

It's to take advantage of the ships covops skill bonus, read the ship description http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Buzzard

Are you using the Alt and Shift keys when you scan?

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

these are magic buttons while scanning.

once your probes are launched, look at them from the top down and arrange like the 5 side on a die
Set the ranges so they overlap comfortably and then SHIFT or ALT to move them as you like.

after trying some more if you still need help feel free to ask me ingame

Don't forget Sisters probes and maybe launcher, though if you get Astro 5 (which I'd rate optional till you want a Deep Space Probe) you can get the T2 launcher for half benefit and a whole lot cheaper.

Also, practice is a large factor.

Yes I am. When I found out about Alt I was happy but I still have the issue where I hone in on a target and get it to about 20 something percent but when I move and drop range it all disappears.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I can't work it out even with the videos side by side with the game I still can't do it.

I'm using Sisters Probes but not a Sisters launcher.

That sounds like you have filters set. If you've set filters to not show a certain type of sig, say grav, and you start to scan down a grav site, the sig will show initially because the type hasn't been identified but will vanish around 25% because that's the point that the type becomes known.

Check and clear your filters, then try again.

Ooh, thanks for that. I have the filter set to grav sites because I'm an industrialist and I only want grav sites. That could very well be where I am going.

I appreciate that tip I'll play around and see what comes of it.

The support skills are too low, so the probes are giving you a bad location on the signature's location. Get your supports up

edit: okay yeah, filters too, very good advice there

That will be causing the sites to disappear. If you start scanning a radar site, it'll show up until it reaches the strength needed to ID the type (around 25%), then it will disappear. They're not vanishing due to poor skills.

Rather clear your filters, show all types then you can selectively right-click -> ignore sigs that you aren't interested in, rather than having them just disappear without warning.

Woohoo, it worked. I locked on pretty quickly. It was a wormhole not a grav site but it's good to know my scanning ability isn't as bad as I thought.

This thread is epic.

OP posts a problem in a very straightforward way.

Nobody trolls him.

One poster goes all out explaining relevant skills and even prioritizing them.

Another poster provides several helpful tips regarding the mechanics of scanning.

Yet nother poster then comes in, thinks outside the box, and troubleshoots the issue. Ends up being exactly right.

Still, no trolls.

Solution is successful, OP leaves satisfied.

WHAT FORUM IS THIS?!?!??

I have the reasonability aura that makes people want to be helpful. :)

I think deep down everyone wants to help everyone but they're just jaded by the idiots that ruin it for the many.

I really do appreciate the help I get here despite the trolls. I found my first ever grav site last night which was why I wanted to scan in the first place. That being said I was helped by the chatroom I hang in to understand Mag and Radar sites as well.

tbh as long as people are polite in their request for help and it isn't "omg wtf my draek isn't imba usuck fix it ccp, tell me hoz to fit"

or something along those lines eve players are more then willing to help out. but people that are assholes or just refuse to have done some work beforehand well.. they get trolled.
