Some say that to appreciate what one has, one may need to try something else. I have played Eve Online now for 5 years, and I was kind of looking for something else to do... just something different. So I decided to try Guild Wars 2, since I have played the original and liked it. I also had read how ArenaNet was going to try to use Eve Online Markets as a model for their Trading Post. Unfortunately, I got sucked into the hype and ended up shelving the game.

Next I tried Planetside 2. I had tried Dust-514 and it just did not stick to me... mostly because it was on the PS3. PS2 is not a bad game, but then SOE [as usual, from what I understand] showed its greed and screwed over the very players that were spending the most on the game... oh well.

For both games, I used the information that the developers were looking to CCP for their player-oriented design model for their games. ArenaNet failed, and SOE may be failing as well.

Now this does not mean I have always agreed with CCP and their decisions for Eve Online... so do not think I am a CCP 'rah-rah'. Hell, there has been more than once when I questioned why the hell I was playing this damn game... but as long as I was able to maintain the subscription, I was willing to spend one more month. SOE actually has tried to listen to their players, but they appear to be falling all over themselves. Information is scattered and sometimes contradictory. When things start to go downhill, they just clam up and pretend nothing is wrong. Funny thing is I do not feel that way with CCP.

I posted on the PS2 Forums...

"One of the developers of Eve Online made a statement that CCP did not own the game… the players did. All that CCP did was provide the environment and tools for the players to create their own worlds. At this point, I believe this because I have felt it. I was hoping to feel that way here as well."

Well, it only took three months for me to question PS2 true colors in this regards.

I also posted...

"That does not mean that I do not think SOE is trying. They are, as they have used our feedback to create new stuff. I just have a gut feeling that SOE is having a hard time following the player-oriented design model. I feel sometimes it is forced, where CCP just goes out and has a beer and eats shark's heads with the players. I want to believe, but that trust has to be earned."

Now, I have not gone to any of the Eve Online gatherings, or met anyone who is working for CCP, or anyone who plays Eve Online for that matter. I am 63 years old and I just do not think that most of the Eve Online players and CCP staff are compatible with this grumpy old man. But I find it interesting that I still feel part of the Eve Online community, which I just have never felt with any other game. I have lasted 5 years here, where the most I have lasted at another game is 2.5 (have been playing online games since 2001... please do not ask how many).

So I just want to thank CCP for doing a job well done. They may be a bunch of beer drinking (made from fart-water), shark head eating, crazy people... but at least they help me feel part of something, even when I am not and they do not know me from a hole in the wall.

Thank you.

P.S... If the rumor that SOE is looking to buy out CCP is true... then I guess I will just have to learn to play golf.

Thank you for your feedback and kind words!

As a side note: If you ever see a player meeting close to your place, just go there - it will be worth it!

Oh, somehow I have the feeling that you don't need to learn how to play golf anything soon. Smile

Yea, CCP rocks. The developers here actually listen to the player base.

Do they make mistakes? Sure, but what game compay doesnt.

Want to know what it feels like to not have the devs listen to you? Go play Diablo 3 lol.

Btw, Free-to-Play MMOG's are not really Free-to-Play. Yes, one can play without paying any money, as long as one does not mind being left behind by those that do pay. The way this is usually done is by buying things that increase one's experience gain and being able to possess better in-game items.

Another interesting fact is that I have paid way more money playing Free-to-Play MMOG's than I have ever paid for Subscription MMOG's... even if one includes the PLEX'es I have purchased in Eve.

So all this hype about the Free-to-Play model may work well for those who cannot afford a subscription... which I wish there was a way to include them in Eve Online as well besides buying a PL.EX. However, the pure purpose of the Dev's of a FtP MMOG is to create content that the players will want to buy... even if they only need to create an illusion that a player needs to buy the next bigger and better thing just to remain competitive.

So I hope that Eve Online does keep the subscriptions.

I'm an “older” player as well. I operate two golf courses and can golf anytime and yet I spend my free time playing Eve.
I had more of a thrill getting through a low sec gate camp last night than I've ever had hitting a little white ball. (Please don't tell any golfers about Eve)

The strategy, depth of play and the amazing, odd, tech savvy, obnoxious and yes the clueless (gotta have someone to blow up) players keeps me logging in all these years.

When I started Eve I played it as a single player game. Only after getting held ransom my first ever visit to low sec did I realize the purpose of being “online” with other players. The 3 “pirates” honored the ransom and I left with my ship and pod smoking but alive. I've been addicted to Eve ever since.

Keep up the good work and good luck with the next ten years.

I also thinking that one main difference between the big Gaming Corporations and CCP is just pure size. By the time one gets to top of the Corporate Ladder, everything is money and future profit expectations. From their prospective, each game is only a line item that produces profit . Even though I believe that CCP still must make business decisions, everyone at CCP still knows what Eve Online is first hand... it is not just 'something over there'. Perhaps CCP forgot that a few years ago, but it realized its mistake and corrected course. Thank you. Other companies like to play 'I have a secret' and keep their customers guessing... because Corporate types must be made happy first before the customers. These Corporate types may be far removed from the actual game/product to really understand what it is all about... making the players feel part of something that perhaps offline does not always make available (and sometimes for good reason).

When asked once why I played online games... I simply replied... "to succeed."

...and also, thanks for the replies and the 'likes'... much appreciated.
