Eve Online always online?

So yeah, I disconnected my internet while playing eve, and it totally continued to play. Is this always online thing just a lie? Don't believe the propaganda from CCP people! I bet the game could easily be patched to work offline. All the module simulation is done locally, true story!

Depending on what you did will your spaceship stay in space for 5 to 15 minutes after a disconnect and thus be exposed to more action than you think.

The server tells the client when to turn on or off effects, like someone shooting at you. If communication stops whatever was happening continues to be shown on your screen. As an example, once I was in a fleet in low sec. We were waiting at a gate for the scouts to do their thing. TS became quiet, ships continued to orbit the gate... minutes passed. Eventually I tried to talk to someone and got no reply. I killed the game and TS, relogged both and found the fleet had seen me warp off after getting a DC, and was now 3 jumps on their way. During the time they were warping gate to gate, I saw ships gate camping, as that was all my client knew about.

This sort of thing typically no longer happens. Instead you get a "socket was closed" message.
