White smoke rises; a Pope has been chosen this day.

Leadership is something you learn. Maybe one day, you'll learn that.

So, quick roundup of hearsay pieces : Argentina-born son of Italian parents, has some type of degree in chemistry, was made priest in 1969 at age 32, he's a Jesuit (monk ?), was sent "packing" to teach highschool chemistry just 4 years after joining the church as punishment for something, only has one (functioning?) lung because he lost the other as a teenager, living way below his standing and means since he became chief honcho in Buenos Aires, etc.
Also, AFAIH, the oldest of all potential candidates.
I guess they could have done worse.

The first to be called Francesco(?).

A humble name for a jesuite, latin american pope.

Let's see how this turns out...

Looks promising. The Church has always been strong in Latin America.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

Francis I (from some Italian patron saint)

P.S. Looks like the wikipedia page is up already (edits heavily restricted) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis

Quote:
Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of Italian immigrants, railway worker[1] Mario Jose Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori, a housewife.
He received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, and then studied at the seminary in Villa Devoto.[2] He entered the Society of Jesus on 11 March 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires.[3]
He was ordained to the priesthood on 13 December 1969 [...] Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979.[5] He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where he had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba
Bergoglio was named Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992 and was ordained on 27 June 1992 as Titular Bishop of Auca,
[...]Bergoglio succeeded Cardinal Quarracino as Archbishop of Buenos Aires on 28 February 1998 and was concurrently named ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Argentina, who had lacked their own prelate. At the consistory of 21 February 2001, Archbishop Bergoglio was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II [...]
A simple lifestyle contributed to his reputation for humility. He lived in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop's residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation,[8] and he reportedly cooked his own meals.
[...]Bergoglio was a frontrunner in the 2005 Conclave. An unauthorized diary of uncertain authenticity released in September 2005[11] confirmed that Bergoglio was the runner-up and main challenger of Cardinal Ratzinger at that conclave. [...]
Bergoglio[12] was elected pope on 13 March 2013 at 7:06 p.m [...]Bergoglio is the first Jesuit priest chosen to be pope.[...]he is the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years[...]Francis is also the first pope since Pope John Paul I to take a previously unused papal name.

As far as we know the lung was removed due to infection.

Do remember that he was just put in the spotlight and a lot of information is still being compiled.

His views are pretty straight forward and to be expected. I disagree with his views on adoption.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.
