The Nightmare and its Drone Bay. Why?

Why is it 75m3? 25m3 for a flight of 'just incase' light drones, then 50m3 for... a flight of mediums? To do what?

I quite literally completely destroy all the frigates in a room in the first 30 seconds of any mission. Then I move up to cruisers, then Battleships last. I kill everything with the tachyons, and only really use the light drones if a frig or spider drones gets past the guns. I usually carry a flight of medium drones, but I tried to use them tonight and they are quite honestly no good for anything.

I set all 5 of them (with all drone skills at 5) onto a battleship in one mission and they couldn't break its tank. OK, no good for that, they saved me A (one) volley on the last battleship in the room. Next mission I set them onto a cruiser and then proceeded to wipe out all the frigates, then all the cruisers and BCs... and they had the cruiser down to about half armour.

Is it just me? Can anyone give me a good use for that last 50m3? I guess I could use sentry drones, but I don't have T2 sentries and I'd prefer not to have to sit in place while shooting. I guess I could use it for backup lights, but I haven't lost a single drone to level 4 missions since the change, so that isn't really needed.

The Nightmare runs missions like a boss anyway, its just that that drone bay annoys me. Make it 25m3, or go the hole hog and let me use a full flight of sentry drones.

I understand completely. The spiky things on the Nightmare annoys me too, it just doesn't make sense.
Oh btw, I would like to recommend you to check out an Amarr Epic Arc mission called "Cowardly Commander" since you've got an elite Nightmare there.

Perhaps one day you realize that your lvl 4 missioning is not in any way relevant to pirate faction battleship design.

Because you see so many Nightmares in PvP amirite?

I guess you could (and I know people do) use a Nightmare for belt ratting or anoms, and it might be nice to have a flight or two of ECM drones for a chance at GTFO.

It still doesn't mean that it was designed for lvl 4 missions, any more than Machariels or Bhaalgorns are. Only shipclass that was specifically designed for PVE are marauders.

3 out of 4 marauders have a 75m3 drone bay, btw.

Yeah, but 4 out of 4 Marauders are completely outclassed for mission running by Pirate Battleships, so whoever designed them screwed up.

Anyway, I think the OP has a point. Ignoring that she seems to have decided that Nightmares are a PvE ship (this IS how it is used), what good is a set of medium drones with no bonuses? Do they actually have any uses, even outside PvE content? I don't think I've ever seen medium drones used in PvP either, except as a 2-2-1 heavy-medium-light split on some battlecruisers.

Not really, pirate battleships have more dps, which works as the missions themselves are way too easy. So whoever designed L4s screwed up.

Besides a full flight of mediums being often much better than a mixed max gank flight in applying damage, Thorax, Brutix, Proteus and Deimos often go for unbonused mediums instead of lights+ECMs for small gang work.

On PVP battleships with 125m3 bay they also make much more sense than only a flight of heavies.

Just do it like I do on my Abaddon: One flight of light drones and a pair of sentries. Doesn't do much, true, but at least you can project some damage.

You can use 2 heavy, 2 Medium and 1 Light, which with Ogre II, Hammerhead II and Hobgoblin II totals at 210 dps with max drones skills.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

Because you may make a mistake and experience the lovely phenomenon of forever tackled. What kind of hater doesn't like having two sets of drones?

Forever scrammed shouldn't happen even with sentries. Just plop them down and move away if you do get scrammed.

There's nothing wrong with 75 bandwidth. If you feel a flight of mediums is useless then don't use them, there a number of other options that you can go for and those no reason to remove that flexibility. I'd you're popping cruisers too fast for mediums to work, just use 2 sentries it's better than nothing.
