I havent played in a long time and a friend of mine got me back into the game. I have been wondering exactly what I should do with myself (Im bored as heck with doing L4 after L4). I decided to check into trading and watched too many "tutorials" to count and read tons on the subject... but I still have SO SO many questions... and so, I have been working on my Trade skills and have the first 5 to lvl 2/3 with 2 others at lvl 2 (IIRC) My question is this:

Sometimes I can place buy orders and it allows me to choose how far out I want it to go (1, 2, 3 jumps ect) and other times, I can only pick station, why is this? I am totally confused and cant seem to find the answer anywhere, any help please?

Also, I was wondering, which is further? Region, Solar System ect? Can anyone explain to me "roughly" how far out each of these are, say, in the Jita area? And if anyone who is a trader with some knowledge would like to "train" a player that is VERY interested in learning the trading ropes, hit me up in game, I would greatly appreciate any hints and/or tips!

Thank you all in advance!

There is a special skill regarding being able to do market stuff remotely.

A skill to set a buy order
A skill for buy order range
A skill to set a sell order
And a skill to modify any existing order.

These skills only apply when you are working with orders that are not at the current station.

The main buy and sell remote skills simply change the distance you're allowed to make remote orders from and the modify skill works the same way.

The extra "buy range skill" changes how far away you can set the remote buy order to buy from. That skill is probably what you're running into as the skill doesn't apply when you're doing the order locally and you get all options.

As for ranges using Jita 4-4 as an example:
Station: Only 4-4
Solar System: Any Station in Jita
5 jumps: Any station in any system within 5 jumps of Jita
- - -
Region: Any station in any solar system in the entire region regardless of jumps from you or security status. (BEWARE USING THIS)

Remember that when doing a buy order the stuff you're buying won't move on its own. So if you set an order 5 jumps out you could be flying all over the place to pick all of it it up if you ordered 1000s of units...

The skills that let you set up orders remotely double the distance with each level: 1, 5, 10, 20, Region. Very few regions will be wider than 20 systems across, so you'll probably be fine with just training to IV instead of V.

Yes, when you do area orders (order range greater than station), you'll be flying all over the place to pick up 1 unit of the stuff, including into lowsec. Typically people set this blanket order up with underpriced orders (buy battleships for 5 ISK), to catch anyone who is unaware of the Advanced Sell Options button in the interface.

Station: The stuff you can only access when docked in a specific docking point.

System: The volume of space with which you can communicate using the "local" channel.

Constellation: A collection of 4-8 systems, typically 3 jumps across at most, connected by jump gates, arranged such that for the most part the shortest (or tied for shortest) route from one part of the constellation is entirely within the constellation.

Region: A collection of constellations and partial constellations roughly adjacent to each other sharing an NPC political affiliation. The shortest jump path from one part of a region to another does not necessarily remain entirely within the region. The longest jump paths from one part of region to another are usually on the order of 10 jumps, 15 on the outside. Level IV of remote access skills will access essentially every part of the vast majority of regions from anywhere within the region in question.

Jita isn't particularly near the pathing "center" of its region, one of its advantages as a trade hub lies in its proximity to multiple regions of space. So if you're trying to reach out in that region I'd definitely go for skill level IV.

I find it odd because in Jita, I am able to set a buy order up for 5 jumps out (which I set 3 buy orders for 5 jumps), but iwhen I go to Unpas (3 jumps away), I can not set anything other than station for this particualr item. Did I reach my max orders with those 3 orders?

Any ideas on this?

I'll probably get flamed royally for being "that guy", but if you are bored of L4 missioning then you're probably better off giving lowsec or nullsec a try. Market trading is not exactly a stimulating activity nor one that takes a significant time investment. Many low/null residents have alts specifically for market gameplay.

I'm not saying that you won't enjoy it. But if you're expecting to use the market to bring fun back into the game and be your primary gameplay focus then I'd recommend that you keep your expectations low on that front.
