Why are we still getting raped at the pumps while the companies providing us with the fuel continue to make absurd profits? I understand capitalism but they are literally sucking this **** out of the earth and then selling it to you at profit making prices. I swear if dirt was as valuable they would kick us off the land take that too and then sell it back to us.

If CCP gave the goons exlusive rights to moon goo and allowed them to be the only ones who can mine it and sell it....would that be cool with everyone? I assume it would for the Americans since they are naturally ignorant it seems.

I will admit I am a complete idiot when it comes to oil companies however I'm quite sure they are excluded from US antitrust laws which basically means they are allowed to just all sit down and decide what their average price will be. No real competition between them as they all benefit from NOT trying to compete. Keep the prices high and ride it out until people simply cannot pay anymore.

I am so upset by this situation now that you brought it up! I've been paying too much for gas, for too long! I'm especially upset because you associated goonswarm with oil companies, and now they are both synergistically MORE evil in my mind! I'm outraged... OUTRAGED!

its a finite resource, which must also be refined, which has finite capabilities. Meanwhile China and India are trying like hell to get cars to everyone, so the resource has more competitive stretching going on.

Also, you can find cars lots of places that run on lots of fuel, such as North America and Europe.

Get a bike, live near work, explore public transit options. There are ways in which to avoid oil company price gouging, cause it ain't going down.

Its also worth noting that many oil companies that we hear about having record profits are not American, such as Chevron, Dutch Shell and BP, yes? Gazprom in Russia too. Its not the US's fault completely, in fact we have tried to legislate lower prices in the past, to disastrous effect.

with such huge profits, the ability to buy off, or "lobby", our leaders is a very real part of their business.

Some of us aren't ignorant, but 99% of us are powerless to do anything about it. It's a plutocracy.

You can't avoid it completely, the costs of transporting the goods you buy to the shop, or the delivery costs for items ordered off the internet, ultimately get paid by you, the consumer. You don't need a car to feel the pain from increasing fuel prices.

Also oil goes into more than just fuel, selling automotive fuel isn't a particularly profitable venture for the oil companies.

Taxes.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

Yep. Meanwhile farmers in the U.S. are getting big subsidies to grow crops for alternative fuels. ("Farmers" here mostly means crop-production corporations, not individual farming families). The result of the subsidies is that grain that would go to producing flour, meat, eggs, dairy products, etc. is going into ethanol. So food prices are going up-- and gas prices are still going up as well.

(Worst of all, the subsidies caused a lot of farmers to switch from growing hops to growing ethanol crops. You know what that does to the price of a nice hoppy beer like an IPA or a Sierra Nevada?)

Iceland are working on becoming the first nation to convert to hydrogen fuel cells. When they do this they will be 100% renewable and free from these arsewipe companiesStraight

They don't really have much of a choice since their credit rating was axed.

Every Icelander could gather and collectively think oil into existence until the fabric of reality tears open and Oil wells spring up all over Iceland and even that would be more likely to happen than anyone lending them money for a modern energy project.

Have you ever noticed that when the media talks about Oil Company Profit, they always talk in Billions of dollars, and not in percentages?

If they spoke of percentages, there would be no way to drum up outrage. Well, people would maybe be outraged over Apple's "obscene" profit margin, or maybe Google's, but the oil companies wouldn't even be a blip on the radar.

Name a shrub after me.  Something prickly and hard to eradicate.

The Western Oil companies such as BP, Shell Texaco ect, are only the refiners and sellers at the pumps in many cases. The actual Crude they sell is extracted and sold to them for the cost of a Barrell of Oil in long term contracts (futures) for the large part, though they do get contracted by some nations national governments to part extract their reserves so they can copy their technology and do it themselves in the other fields.

OPEC is to blame, if you want cheap oil tell all those impoverished third world nations to stop demanding above extraction costs for the commodity that's pulling their nations out of the doldrums of the global economy. Sorry to say but this is poor countries realizing that for once they have leverage over the West and milking it for all its worth. If they push to hard, they find the west develops Hydrogen Cars or Electric, France went full Nuclear as a result of this market distortion. They need the West to have cheap enough energy that it has a market, but not so cheap they can't squeeze every penny. Basically a classic Laugher Curve.
