What is the plural of noctis? Noctises? Noctii?

Noctis could be a completely fictional name, that is made up by a developer who knows nothing about latin, much less about its third declination. In that case a general plural would be "noctises".

If who invented them wanted to use latin as radix, then Noctis is not a noun, it's a genitive of the name "nox" (night) and means "of the night".

A plural of the noun "nox" is "noctes".

I don't agree (yeah a surprise) with Tippia suggesting "noctium" because latins would not just transpose a genitive into its plural, they'd use the proper noun made into plural. If we really want to "force-noun-plural" a genitive then we may as well consider it a developer fantasy made name and call them Noctises.

Edit: that's the problem with Wikipedia and dictionaries, they are tools to be used with background information on the topics they cover yet most just copy and paste.

Very impressive, Vearah.

If I understood it, I would be impressed with me also.

A genitive by itself in latin often means man, woman, or thing of the x, where x is the genitive. If we assume it means "Thing of the night" (It's more elegant in latin), then the plural would still be Noctis, only the context would change. Even if we say it means "Man/Woman of the night", the plural would still be Noctis.

Ergo, the plural of Noctis is Noctis.

I just have to wonder what was int he CCP dev's minds when they decided on "Primae" and "Noctis" as the names. Google "Jus Primae Noctis" if you are not familiar with the phrase already.

…which leads back to the question of what is it you want to pluralise? Do you want the plural to be “[something of-the-night]s” or do want it to be “[something]s of the night”… or “something of-the-[night]s”?

If we just take the word and then pick its plural form, we arrive at noctium.

For the record, I decided on this name before I knew there was a ship in the game called "Noctis" and being fully aware of what the word means.

Tippia gave the simplest and most grammatically correct answer to the original question.

The problem is that it is used as a proper name in EVE. Although, like Vaerah was getting at, it makes little to no sense for it to be used as such on its own and "noctium", despite being the proper plural form, probably sounds even more odd than the singular and distorts the meaning.

With (some) respect to Latin grammar and in attempt to preserve the meaning, using "noctis" for both singular and plural makes sense in the given context, or you could go the fully Anglicized way and use "noctises" instead. Personally, I find the former option much more appealing/correct.

What would the plural of "primae noctis" be?

Since Noctis is a noun, not part of a phrase, I think it's safe to assume that English style pluralisation is appropriate: "Noctises". Or if you want to sound like a bobo (that's a French perjorative for "hipster", derived from "bourgeoisie bohemian") you could try fancy false-Latin endings such as Noctii or Noctium. That will impress your dumb friends in the noob PvP corp, but won't pass muster on the forums.

Latin's a dead language, as dead as dead can be. It killed the ancient Romans, and now it's killing me!
