Posting to notify whoever's reading that the problem I described in my last post has mysteriously vanished as of Retribution 1.0.14. I very recently installed some overdue updates for Windows, so it looks like my particular problem was on the Windows side and not the EVE client's.

Damnit, it's back! And there wasn't even a patch (that I'm aware of).

I would unsub until these problems go away (going back to Windows 7 isn't an option), but my sub just ticked over... well, I guess I'll see if I can fix it again.

I just upgraded my custom-built PC to Windows 8. I am having a similar problem as others where I get randomly disconnected from EVE. More clients seems to drastically increase the probability of the disconnect. I'm fairly sure it's a problem between EVE and Windows 8; not the NIC drivers. I swapped harddrives and tried the EXACT same hardware on Windows 7 with no issue. Shocked I set up a constant ping test to my local wireless access point and determined that the EVE client actually shuts down my connection entirely. I have tried to recreate this disconnect with other applications (downloaded a 2GB file, load test software, etc). My computer did not drop a single packet for two solid days until immediately after running the EVE client. I tried two different NICs (Cisco AE1000 and Belkin N900 DB) but both have the same issue. I use FIOS with the MI424WR-GEN2 wireless access point, but I'm sure that it's not the problem because Windows 7 does not experience this issue. Both Windows 7 and Windows 8 builds have nearly the same software installs (Skype is the only difference).

So I think I have eliminated hardware, drivers, access point, and configuration, but EVE client still temporarily kills my network connection.

Anyone with any ideas? QuestionQuestionQuestion

Only thing I can think of is hardcore. Install wireshark and monitor the raw data, see if you can decipher anything or any problems with that.

Been running Windows 8 on two desktops and one laptop since last August. No problems with main Tranquility client of any of the test clients (Buckingham, Duality, Singularity) since then. Overall they seem to run exactly the same as they did on Windows 7.

Agreed here - I do experience some bugs, but they don't seem to be related to "Windows 8" - they are the same bugs Windows 7 people are complaining about. Long loads into station if using Captain's Quarters and white screen at times.

I have three comps all running windows 8 Pro (64 bit) two are laptops, one desktop. I don't have any issues running eve with any of them. They're all running nvidia cards (the laptops are running mobile versions of course). All are intel processors with anywhere from 4 to 16 GB of RAM. Sometimes I do get the client locking up, but that happened in 7 and Vista as well.

PS: Alt-Tabing between eves agitates the problem and guaranties a crash

Are you using the latest WHQL drivers or beta drivers etc? What actual version of the drivers have you installed. This may help EVE dev support.

Didn't have any problems with Windows 7 until I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro.

Please help, any suggestions?

Having the same issue. EVE runs fine. However when I exit or alt tab my home screen is unbearable. Multi colored rainbow of complete fail. If i put to sleep or kill the screen and bring back it returns to normal. The only fix I have found is to run EVE in windowed mode.

Havent been on this fourm on awhile. However my problems still exist as it's a on and off switch. Sometimes I crash, sometimes I don't. It mainly freezes and crashes while being locked on or locking onto something and also while in combat. When doing anything else, it's fine.

Using Windows 8 Pro. Did not upgrade from W7
(Has also attempted compatability modes that have been said to work and modes suggested by W8.)

My Windows 7 laptop died so I have been forced to use windows 8 on my new one. The biggest issue I am having is randomly not being able to have 2 clients open at once. The first one opens but the 2nd one crashes. This makes my alt all but unusable for now. I hope that you have the windows 8 support soon.

Also suffering some socket closure on Win 8. Sometimes repeatedly, sometimes just once, most of the time not at all. Can't find a specific trigger, has happened both in space and in hangar.

Another issue seems to be occasional dark or black screens in hangar, but only the hangar view, the windows remain normal. Always resolved by ESC to the er, ESC menu.

I've been experiencing serious lock-up issues. They are random. When EVE locks, I can't end task the program no matter what and have to reboot. However, MOST of the freezes occur when I alt-tab out of the game.

So I'm having 2 issues with EVE on my Win8 laptop, both of which appear to be mentioned in this thread:

1: Whenever I play EVE fullscreen, when I quit the game my desktop basically looks like a Carebear puked on it while tripping on acid. I can fix it by changing my resolution settings in Control Panel, this causes the monitor to do a soft power cycle, and when the picture comes back it is fine. That's not really a big concern for me, however;

2: If I have Mumble (voice chat) running and am connected to a server, when I try to run the EVE client it crashes to desktop shortly after it executes. I don't even make it to the login screen. From what I saw this is common not only with Mumble but with other voice chat clients as well (TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, et cetera)

So far those are the only two issues I have had with the EVE client specifically. However, I am annoyed as hell at Windows 8 in general, and after discovering the above I figure it's high time I downgraded. Even if Windows 8 has better performance, it's not worth the extra trouble of using the Metro GUI. Besides, since Win8 is still relatively new, most developers haven't been able to effectively patch their applications to work with the new OS.

Just a suggestion to anyone running a Microsoft OS, it may not be a bad idea to always use the oldest OS that is still supported, or the OS that came before the newest one. Generally Microsoft won't cut support for an OS until it's at least outdated by 1 1/2 times (i.e. they cut support for XP after Win7 had been out for a year or so). There are two reasons for this. One, Windows tends to follow an alternating trend of good, crap, good, crap. Windows XP is good. Windows Vista is crap. Windows 7 is good, and Windows 8 is crap, and so on. Two, it takes some time for any application developed on one OS to run smoothly on a newer OS. This is because the various bugs that appear due to compatibility differences need to actually be found and fixed, and this takes time and a lot of sifting through user bug reports.

My point is that anyone who is considering getting Windows 8 should hold off for now, and that anyone attempting to play EVE on a Win8 computer would probably have a lot less hassle if they rolled back to Win7. Win7 is new enough that most applications still support it, but old enough to where there has been plenty of time to find and fix compatibility issues with these. This is true for all applications not just the EVE client.

That said, I probably will have to take a day off of playing so I can get Win7 installed. It's going to take a while, I have to wait for my old laptop to finish being wiped so I can install it on there and use it as a backup/LAN file server for all of my files on this computer. Then I'll need to xfer, wipe, install, and xfer back. It'll probably take most of the night and that's if I decide not to take a break and sleep.
