Hey there fellow eve players,
Im kind of new to the game and don't even know if this is under the right forum topic, if it is please tell me. But i started playing eve a day ago and i like the mining concept. The only thing i don't know is what skills to train in, what ships to get and what to actually mine. So if anyone could please guide me in the right direction it would be much appreciated Big smile

Thank and happy gaming

This is the right place, though I am not the right guy for extended advice.

Start training skills in the 'Industry' category
Industry
Mining
Refining
and some of the lower level proccessing skills.

Someone more experienced will probably be along shortly. There are some links, other threads, strategies, etc.

Look up and read isk the guide. You can download as a pdf, Theres a heavy detailed mining section.

Venture & Mining Barge will be your ships of choice.

If someone tells you you 'need' a licence to mine, you don't.
They will try thier best to make your ingame-life less profitable, if you do not agree to thier "fee".
They are just ordinary players, so you can ignore them all you want to, they are largely unimportant (which them makes them sad & angry).

You can find many reasonably decent mining sites here.

It mentioned mining frigates and cruisers, those have all been replaced by the Venture.

A reasonable miner fit for the Venture can be found at:

As you get higher level skills, you will want to move up to a Retriever or a Procurer. My advice is to learn some aspects of PvP because whether you want to PvP or not, it will come to you.

To broaden the suggestions a bit, there are two parts to mining:

1. Shooting rocks in space (already covered)

2. Not dying when someone who doesn't want said rocks shot for whatever reason comes along.

Basically, tack some shield tanking skills on there for when you're expecting trouble.

Train the right skills: You'll need skills to fly mining ships, skills to mine efficiently, and general skills to make you an effective pilot. For a very basic beginning, you'll want to train:

Ship Skills: Start in the Venture (introductory mining frigate) which requires the "Mining Frigate" skill. But you'll quickly want to move into Mining Barges, where you can stay for a pretty long time. That means training the "Mining Barge" skill - which has some specific prerequisites in the Industry and Science trees.

Industry / Science skills: Train Mining to IV (+ mining yield, also allows you to use strip miners), Astrogeology to III (+ mining yield, requires Mining IV and also Science IV) and Industry V (doesn't help mining directly, but gets you into a Mining Barge). Once you're in a Mining Barge, you can start training that skill, along with maxing out skills like Mining and Astrogeology, and training new skills like Refining, Refining Efficiency and the various [Ore] Processing skills (all increase the amount of minerals you get when you process raw ore, and the last ones allow you to use higher level mining crystals to further increase your ore yield). The first two [Ore] Processing skills to train would probable be Veldspar Processing and Scordite Processing. You'll also want to train Mining Upgrades to IV (allows you to fit modules that further increase your mining yield).

Ship Fitting / Piloting Skills: Pick up some basic skills to improve the way your ship handles and to ensure you can fit the modules you need. Super basics would include the following skills, roughly grouped by class (side note: you'll want to max some of these skills ASAP):

Electronics IV (increase CPU)
Engineering IV (increases PG)
Energy Management IV (increases your capacitor, which powers your mining lasers and warp drive)
Energy Systems Operation IV (increases the rate that your capacitor recharges)

Shield Management IV (increase total shields)
Shield Operation IV (increase shield recharge rate)
Hull Upgrades IV (increases total armor)
Mechanics IV (increases total structure)
Jury Rigging III (allows you to fit rigs to your ship, usually to increase shield strength, ship speed or drone abilities)
Shield Rigging III (allows shield rigs, which can increase your shield resists or total shield strength)

Drones IV (allows up to four drones to defend yourself from asteroid belt pirates)
Scout Drone Operation IV (gives your drones enough range to protect you)
Combat Drone Operation IV (gives your drones extra damage to protect you)
Mining Drone Operation IV (allows you to use mining drones to speed your mining, if you so choose)
Drone Rigging III (allows drone rigs, if you want them)

Navigation IV (makes your super slow ship a little faster)
Evasive Maneuvering IV (makes your super bulky ship align faster)
Warp Drive Operation IV (helps conserve capacitor when jumping between asteroid belts)
Astronautics Rigging III (allows rigs that can make your ship faster or more agile)

Targeting III (ensures you can target as many asteroids/enemies as your ship permits)
Survey III (slight increase to the speed of asteroid scanners)
Signature Analysis III (slight increase in time for targeting asteroids and enemies)

Without remapping your attributes or using implants, you can go from a fresh character to a mid-level Mining Barge using basic strip miners in less than 14 days. Less than two weeks later, you can put Tech 2 strip miners on that ship (with Tech 2 mining crystals) and effectively mine all the major/common high-sec ores. Getting your shield/armor/structure, rigging, and navigation skills in place will then take less than two more weeks, while these ultra basic drone skills will take another 4-5 days tops.

All told, the above skills will take a fresh character about 40 days to train, and by the end, you'll be a passable high-sec miner. From there, if you're still enjoying yourself, you can build off of these to get into even bigger miners/increase your yield/branch out into gas and ice mining, refining . . . you'll find lots of options.

Hope this helps!

Almost forgot, you'll probably want to train a couple Trade skills to sell your ore, and a coupleSocial skills as well.

Trade
Trade to IV will take a little over a day and give you plenty of room for sell orders. Tack on Retail III and you'll be set for a while.

Contracting to III is good for shopping around for ships and takes no time at all.

Marketing III is of slight benefit to extend the range of your market reach.

Accounting to III and Broker Relations to III are of marginal utility at best.

Social

Connections IV (if you run missions - including mining missions - to increase your standing with NPC corps, this will give you bigger bang for your buck. The reason to do this is to reduce the refining "tax" imposed on you when you refine your ore)
Social IV (also increases your standing gain with NPC corporations)
Fast Talk IV (not really worth it, but if you end up killing belt rats you'll gain security status anyways, this will increase the gain. Might give you a cushion if you ever decide to kill someone in low sec.
