I'm not really on either side of this, I'm not from Japan. I am genuinely curious about this. I can understand a case like China where their government situation is... well.. "complicated". However what is the motivation do billing for Japan differently than everyone else in the world? Are there other countries that have to do it in a special way? Like Russia?

Seriously? What is different about japan? I would say everything!
Perfect example how they are different

And no, Russia uses same billing service as the rest of you.

They speak Japanese?

I would think getting an entire content team to work and provide assistance in Japanese can be an expensive and daunting task unless you say, delegate it to another entity?

If that entity also deals with billing and thus the assistance and GM help with that, you got yourself an extra market with good native speakers without the need to import a bunch of Japanese language majors to Iceland.

I agree with myself, still I must agree with the fact that forcing people to pay for eve through a third intermediary that demands your personal info and has in the past proven to be unreliable with this... sounds like a bad idea to me. If people want to sub with CCP directly they should be able to do so, period, they wouldn't have acces to japanese speaking GM's and what not I guess but I assume for those people that wouldn't be a problem.

If i remember right, Nexon basically has a complete stranglehold on the Japanese market when it comes to MMO's, though i couldn't tell you the reason behind it.

CCP has limited manpower, even running Eve as they do, Japanese is a very, very difficult language, especially the text. There's over ~2000 different characters that commonly appear in Newspapers,~1200 of which are what you should know by middle school. Compare that to the 26 letter English alphabet. Localizing a game with so much text is an enormous job, and i doubt CCP have many staff fluent in Japanese, let alone enough time.

On the other hand, they can leave it to Nexon, who do it for a living, have staff ready, and already basically own the market. The tradeoff being, Nexon is in charge of the advertisement, pricing, distribution, etc.

Personally, i really, really dislike Nexon. They're spotty and extremely unscrupulous, but even i have to acknowledge there was probably no other way.

Why pay through NEXON?...

Well, here in Japan having international VISA cards, and such, is somewhat rare (relatively). They have a lot of different credit/debit card systems, and due to the high risk of credit card fraud with international VISA most ATM's don't accept them.

Also cash is very prevalent (as opposed to paying by card), plus many guys get allowances from their wives (who handle everything to do with money) so a way of paying with cash gives a much larger potential customer base. So easier for many to buy NEXON points at a convenience store with cash.

is there option? i could understand having NEXON as a choice (such as sub/GTC/PLEX). but mandatory intermediary billing sounds inconvenient, at least.

maybe this is because of "western civilization people" simply have no chances if Japanese players will join? Cool

NEXON is Korean company sucking blood out of us Japanese cuz Japanese game industry men were too busy screwing each others asses off.

Sumsong and Hyundai are also Korean, in case you didn't know.

Oh and NEXON wants their hand in your pocket all the time.
And they are Korean company, they have no moral boundaries when squeezing the last bit of cash from us.
It's money, money, money. Behind most of the "why did they -----" weirdness, u see maneh!
