7 seconds with a set of virtues and mad scanning skills.

15-20 seconds for about 90% of the people you run across trying to scan you down.

Not today spaghetti.

I know guys that can have someone scanned and pointed in 15 seconds. It's not particularly hard.

Can totally scan someone down in 30 seconds or less (depending on their sig radius vs their scan strength)...

- Start with a scanning toon having max (5) astro skills (pinpointing, rangefinding...)
- Throw some sexy 05' scanning implants in their head (PPF, PPG, PPH)
- Fully train a scan ship like the Buzzard with its scan boosts
- Use sisters expanded & combat probes
- Disco!

Now, if the ship in question has a small sig radius AND has ECCM's fitted to increase their sensor strength above sig radius, you can't probe lock them at all Shocked i.e. A Tengu pilot with Halo's and 3 ECCM's is pretty much un-lockable at 100%

As mentioned, its best to use d-scan first to localize where to drop probes at 4AU so as not to alert someone you are probing them, but if its raw speed vs the unwary I just start probing...

Was gonna say, fit more ECCM people! While its true that its theoretically possible to probe out my triple eccm link loki with maxed skills and some pricey implants, no ones managed to do it in under 30 seconds lol.

it depends on the circumstances. If I'm going in blind, it can take a very long time to scan down a single ship in a crowded system. However, if I've managed to obtain your scan signature or determine what celestial your deadspace is near, I should be able to lock you well inside of 30 seconds. At most it will take me 3 scans under those conditions.

Shortly after the removal of unscannable T3s, a friend of mine built something like this and challenged me to find it in an empty system. It took me 4 scans.

Maybe it's all the technique? v0v

I keep seeing this in various places that a "good" SP pilot with combat probes can find you in 30 seconds, at the same time, it seems to mean that they can only find you in 30 seconds when you are at a celestial, and not in opens space, and in open space it will take a lot longer.

Is that basically correct? Or can someone with combat probes actually scan you down in a deadspace mission area in under a minute?

it takes longer than 30 seconds to deposite 5 probes into space.....

All cosmic sigs spawn within 4AU of a celestial, which means that you don't have to have the probes all huge in range and increases the scan strength. That makes the claim fairly plausible. I've personally scanned down mission runners in high-sec in under a minute with Astrometrics to IV and the supports to III, but that's quite an easy thing to do.

Missions don't spawn within 4 AU of a celestial on any kind of consistent basis. I regularly use missions to create bookmarks out of d-scan range of any celestial.

I know a guy who can scan you down in about 5 seconds

Yup. As long as you know roughly where the target is, and use a decent formation of probes, you can scan any mission runner or exploration ship in one cycle. Maybe two if you guessed wrong the first time and need to move the probes.

If the target isn't mashing d-scan every 4 seconds they'll never know you were looking.

That just means one or two more scans to narrow your hidey hole down to somewhere inside an 8AU sphere. That's an extra 10-15 seconds depending on mouse handling skills.

Think that is scary. If someone has an idea where you are and can scan you down fast enough, they can nail you after you have logged off. with the new mechanics all they need to do is tag you with something, and you pick up a 15min PVP timer. Log back in and find yourself at a station.
Which is why you NEVER log off in a predictable location unless you're someplace solid - Like inside a POS shield.

If you see my combat probes, you got lucky or you're spamming D-scan. (or you're in one of those tiny, <14 au across systems where there's no 'off-scan' to drop).

Properly done, we don't scan, reduce, scan again. One scan, that's it. Any more and you're almost guaranteed to spook the target.

The lesson here is 'spam D-Scan constantly.' The instant you see combat probes, GTFO. Don't wait. They're in-warp to your location, if not already there. Abandon anything you've got lying around and boogie.

Nah. We're just verifying your location to avoid any misunderstandings about who's mining which asteroid. You really can just go about your business.

Not sure if you are talking about NS or WH but obviously if you are in nullsec you dont have to worry because you have instant intell on anything that comes into system with you.

I have a perfect skilled virtue scanner and in a wormhole where you have more time to d-scan I can narrow you down so I will usually get you with 1 scan. This means my probes will probably only be visible on your d-scan for about 12seconds.

Industrials / cap ships can be scanned down 100% at 16AU (out of d-scan range) with my skills and implants.

Oh, of course. And that cloaky Proteus that just landed in my Sleepers Anom? He's just being neighborly.*

The other night I found a guy without using any probes when he wasn't at a celestial.

He was in my WH system, and was trying to rat in a drake.

What I did was warped to the sun and did an on-board scan, no decloak needed. I then ordered all the anoms I got to 100% by distance and used dscan to see when he appeared.

Lucky for me it was the first one, 1.44 AUs out.

I tried 1.40 AUs, he wasn't there, 1.44, he popped back on my results...low and behold there he was.

Sadly the fact I had a short point to **** with MWDs let him get away as he had moved away from the spot I bookmarked by the time I got back. :3

....Note to self, keep a spare long point on the POS for those situations...

The Drake is a Lie

For doing this sort of work, you just max out all the probing skills, or is there a point where some like Astro Rangefinding V (>30 days for me) are usually skipped?

I apparently have no idea what I'm doing.

Which is why one of the earlier posters mentioned that < 14au systems can be a bit of a nuisance unless you had a mission there that gave you a nice deep safe to drop the probes at.

It's not w-space if you're not in fleet with guys you ganked a week ago. Or an hour ago, in one particular instance. Also blue-on-blue on wh action is where it's at, yo.

(1) drop probes outside of your target's dscan range, drag them way out of the solar system plane, arrange probe pattern

(2) use dscan (and the F11 map!) to locate your target's deadspace area as closely as possible ("x AU from this celestial in direction of that celestial)

(3) apply the information from (2) and do 1-2 scans to get the 100% hit, don't let your probes stay in your target's dscan range any longer than necessary (don't scoop them just yet, just drag them away & scan).
