On my new laptop the Suns are ungodly bright pulsating masses - so much that I can't ever look in their direction without being blinded. This makes PvPing very difficult - is there any setting for Gamma/Brightness I can mess with?

Turning on HDR made them slightly less bright, but they're still painful.

Well, sun are in their nature, a very bright (and hot) celestial objects. Our own Sun has Luminosity of ~3.75×10^28 lumen.

But, I digress... Have you tried enabling the brackets and using color tags with tactical overview? It doesn't solve the light from the sun issue, but you can also rotate the camera around, so it isn't pointing at the sun. =)

The main problem is with d-scanning - I literally can't see the brackets of objects near the sun, much less my ship to align the camera with the target. The sun literally takes up the whole screen, no matter how far away I am from it.

In combat I try to avoid looking at is as much as possible, aye, but can't always manage it.

What kind of graphics card do you have? Also have you made sure you've installed the latest available drivers for it?

We know that Intel graphics cards have problems with the sun in many cases.

IF you have a laptop it's possible it has two graphics cards, one for normal use and one for high end use. Have you checked if the ATI graphics card is being used after starting the client.

Simply press the Settings button at the log in prompt and go to the "Display & Graphics" tab, there in the top left corner the graphics card in use should be displayed. Make sure it's the ATI graphics card.
