Future of gaming, tablets, ARM, Linux and EVE

I actually don't have EVE installed right now. I had to remove Windows 8 Professional from my PC and reinstall Windows 7, but I will install EVE.

While I was away I read some very interesting threads about tablets and EVE.

I bought Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 just about month ago and to be honest, I haven't used my PC after that. My computer usage is very basic. I use browser, text editing, spreadsheets and printer.

All that I can do with that androd tablet. Now it doesn't have full multitasking, like PC's have, but to my huge surprise I haven't really suffered from it.

Now, into the point. I came across this another space game, Vendetta Online when I was looking through Google Play store.

I installed it and wow how well it does run in that tablet. Well it has quad core cpu and 2G of ram, so not really a surprise. But the most important thing was the GUI. You used our thumbs to control your space ship. It was actually very nice way to control the ship.

That game runs in WIndows, Mac, Linux and Android. Pretty nice from four guys doing the game. Of course it seriously isn't as good game than EVE is.

Right now Valve has released their linux client, with around 50 games. The quality is getting better and bugs are being removed. Windows 8 is just bad. It just isn't what I have hoped for.

I see that ARM will be huge player in nearby future. Games in tablets are pretty basic, but you can always attach your tablet into huge TV screen, kb, mouse and docking bay. I can connect my note wirelessly into my tv and play games from big screen, wich is nice.

I think that there is a very good chance of creating a working EVE client for 10 inch tablets. Last year was massive for ARM and tablets and this year will be even bigger.

Windows 8 and intels problems in typical usage are high battery consumption and having a fan. While ARM devices are completely silent, windows tablets always have a fan (except the ARM version ofc).

There will be huge change in gaming industry and CCP should make opening move like Valve did.

While android client is still far away from happening, a real linux client is reality.

Normal gaming pc's are here for atleast 5 years, even more. But they will most likely run Ubuntu or Fedora, instead of Windows 8.

Linux client, that's what EVE needs.

My two cents. Fly relatively safe!

Normal gaming PC's are here forever, and it'll take a lot more than 50 games to shake off Windows as the only legitimate gaming OS.

Also, of course Windows 8 is bad, every second release is, on purpose.

Edit: Almost forgot, inb4 move to OOPE

EvE on Linux is technically possible, but requires WINE. A native Linux client would be awesome, but CCP have a lot of bugs to squash in the game, itself, first.

Donations of any doll items are graciously accepted anywhere in the universe of EvE!

Why would CCP spend time, money and resources to satisfy 1-2% of users that can run EVE with Wine anyway?
They still not implemented DX11 support, because some old-fashioned weirdos use outdated Windows XP, and you demand whole native client for insignificant % of people who just need to be "not like others"?

Also, yet another thread about "Linux will dominate. This is revolution!". Happens every month or so.

10" tablet running EVE Online? I can see how well that will be received.... EVE is quite simply the number 1 game when it comes to requirements on screen estate, literally no tablet out there is even close to being capable of filling those requirements and based on the way tablets are being used, I don't see 22" and bigger tablets suddenly becoming a thing for the obvious reasons. Obviously screen estate is more about the resolution itself rather than the physical size of the screen, but think of it this way, 10" with 1080p resolution, just how are you going to use your fingers on it and not target the wrong stuff, activate the wrong command etc etc. It quite simply does not nor will it ever work in that enviroment.

Linux on the other hand could and would work, but as long as the linux user count remains low, there's no point in even considering about making a proper linux version.

You can kind of do this with TeamViewer but it's a bit fiddly. less so on a tablet I';d imagine, I've only ran it on my phone. i don't think Eve as it is currently lends itself to touchscreen devices at all well.

Which is't to say that certain aspects of the game couldn't be managed from a tablet. Skill Training, clones, trade, industry, contracts, inventory etc. everything in space would be a nightmare though.

Aura is brilliant, something like that I can fiddle with on the bus would be excellent.

But think of all the failed titan jumps that would happen! Obviously this is the main reason ccp should implement this.

But if Linux becomes commonplace you'll need to start using something else to show what a special snowflake you are Roll

It runs mostly okay on my 13" laptop. Just dial down text sizes.

Windows 8 has some problems, but it is not terrible. I installed it on my main box and my laptop and both are running EVE.

Whether it would work or not I doubt eve will come to tablet because it would require a change up of how ships are steered and the devs have resisted doing this since literally the game was released. Past reasons for not changing up the interface usually involve great difficulty in redoing the code.

Yeah once I installed start8 windows 8 really wasn't as bad as a lot of people are saying. Just need to get rid of that stupid metro screen and all is well.

I just cant imagine myself playing EVE on something touchy and small, sorry.
I like to sit in my command seat while using keyboard and mouse to play very complex game. No way to make the game usable for touchscreen and preserve its uniqueness and complexity at the same point.

This. There's a reason why they gave up the Linux client: because it satisfied a user base that amounted to a rounding error and spent time and effort on something that those users already got for free (and better) from the rest of the Linux community.

…for the last 15 years or so. That's 180 months straight of revolution, with very little to show for it.

That's because underneath the metro screen, it's Windows 7.

You should switch to 7 if possible. I too am a stick in the mud when it comes to OS upgrades (it takes incompatible hardware or games to get me to switch). But 7 is genuinely better.
