Hello,

So I'm new, I was minding my own business for a while, asked a few questions in the chat now and then, and suddenly some guy tells me I got a 20 million bounty on pinned on my butt and that it happens often.

So, since obviously I didn't do anything, if I'm getting killed by some bounty hunter, will he and his contracter at least be convicted as criminals or something?

If not they definelty should.

A bounty doesn't create any kind of kill right on you. And it doesn't pay big to anyone who shoots you; rather, it's a pool to pay out bounty for killing you to the tune of one fifth of the estimated cost of what got blown up. The consequences for shooting you with a bounty on your head are exactly the same as shooting you with no bounty.

Since you seem pretty new, you probably aren't going to be flying any absurdly expensive ships around - and really it's a good habit to not fly super spendy ships around anyways. So it's probably not really worth it to shoot you.

If you go suspect or some such thing, people will probably shoot you anyways - the bounty just helps pay for their ammo later. It's the icing on the cookie at most.

That also means you're going to have that bounty for quite awhile. Just ignore it and roll your eyes at what it does to your picture.

Yeah, your bounty won't disable Concord; the normal high-sec rules apply.

And if they declare war or somehow kill you, they get 20% of the value of your ship, not the whole bounty. You can have 30 billion bounty on you, if all you fly are frigates, they won't get more than 200k at a time.

I'm reassured but I don't really get it.

So if I choose later to become a bounty hunter, when someone has a bounty on their head that won't mean I'll get the displayed ammount?

Correct.

You'll get the lower of:
20% of the value of what you've destroyed.
What remains of the bounty.

The reason behind this is to stop it being worth blowing your own stuff up, with an alt, or corp mate. (insurance and so on as well)

Correct; you get a fraction of the cost of their shiny ship. This is to keep pirates from just giggling hysterically as they blow themself up with an alt to collect the bounty, which totally defeats the purpose of the bounty.

It's also to protect the image of the pirate. I mean, giggling pirates? who could respect them? Bear

Correct. For now, though, don't worry too much about having a bounty...

If you become a bounty-hunter, you have to be smart.

1. Flip/bait them, declare war, get a hold of a killright, catch them in lowsec or null, basically disable Concord somehow.

2. Catch them in a BIG ship, or with expensive cargo (the value of the cargo also affects the payout).

3. Corner them - away from stations where they can dock, away from their friends, warp scrambled and ECM'd, etc.
