To trash or not to trash starter ships... or sell... or something?

Trying to figure out what to do with my ships as things progress... I graduated from Reaper to Burst and I'm not sure if I should sell the Reaper or scavenge it (already stripped armaments and put them on my Burst but not sure about breaking it down further) or if I should just hold onto it... any tips on how to maximize my holdings while boosting my potential as an epic space warrior?

Each race has a noob-ship.

For you that is the reaper. It's a free ship, if you dock at a station that you don't have any ship in, you get a free reaper.

So for the reaper, it's kind of worthless (cause people can get them free). Trash that.

As for other stuff other then a noob-ship or civilian modules. Either sell them or reprocess then and then sell / use the minerals.

Most people trash them, as I don't think they reprocess into anything. The Reaper is free, you get a free one every time you dock with your pod at a station where you have no ships.

You can, however, put all the newbie quest-related items (graduation certificates, all the civilian crap modules) into its cargo, and leave it at the school where you started, if you really want.

Your Assets tab will get cluttered soon enough, no worries there. You'll have plenty of ships to keep track of.

Also remember that at some point you will get atomized, and will go stumbling around "Oh phooey, I need a fitted ship to get back there and finish what I was doing.." This is not the moment you want to be trying to buy and collect all the fittings for a new hull.

Well I tend to use the last part.

Any station I base(d) out of or that is/was important to me I leave something behind. So that when I open my assets window I can say...aaah, I remember that station, it was when I was part of "x" and doing "y"...

I use the rookie ship as a free shuttle. In PVP I dock at the nearest station and then get into my rookie ship to bug out of the system. It keeps me from feeling naked with just my pod.

I also use it to go pick up a ship from another system. I fly in my rookie ship and trash it and fly back my new shiny ship.

Start the day off slow and taper off from there.

You can trash your noob ships, and probably all Civilian-class modules as well, but I suggest you keep a few lower-end ships around in various stations, as soon as you can afford it.

I have several mining barges lying around, in different stations, as a reserve, in case I go totally bankrupt and need to work my way up again from zero. Likewise I have a few mission ships, suitable for running level 1, 2, 3 and 4 missions. And they're all fitted with modules, and with some ammo or stripper crystals in reserve.

It has never happened to me, and probably never will. But somehow it feels good to have this reserve.

I mostly leave my noob ships in space when not needed any more. So others can take them for lols.

Or so that you can set a destination to the regional trade or quest hubs with a couple of clicks instead of by memorizing and typing the name of intermediate systems along your route into the text box and highlight/linking them.

I actually figured out the minimum number of waypoints to make a non-stupid route from my usual high/low haunts to my usual null haunts and have taxis there for the old "open assets, right click".

I guess I could use the people and places interface, but man, if you think the assets tab is cluttered to the point of uselessness...

When you reach 100+ stations in your asset list... trashing random noobships and worthless mods becomes more appealing.

Jeeze, my OCD would kick in well before that number of stations showed up on my asset list.

I use them as easy important station bookmarks in my assets lol, or as a cheap shuttle.

I once podded myself by blowing a huge fart.

Good info, thanx! Question tho... I recently had my Burst shot out from under me and I had insurance on it, what can I do to get the ship back, or is that not an option (outside of buying a new one or some such)... also just got my first Rifter and it's a beautiful thing!

You can only get the ship back by putting the insurance payout towards the cost of a new one.

Edit: Or run another tutorial mission that gives a free one (e.g. business or exploration) or build one from the blueprint that the industry tutorial agent provides.

My OCD usually kicks in when before I even have a half dozen stations in the list.

Insurance basically pays you back a certain amount of ISK depending on how much ISK you spent on that insurance. There is a trade off between the ratio of the cost of insurance and money recieved upon destruction, VS the difference of the cost of insurance and money recieved upon destruction. It's an investment that only pays off if you lose a ship. Platinum insurance has the largest payout, but the worst cost to payout ratio. For faction, tech 2 or tech 3 ships even platinum payouts are far less than the cost of the ship, and it never includes the cost of modules. If you're unlikely to lose the ship any time soon, go for a lower level of insurance.

Important to remember that in EVE online when something explodes it is GONE. Insurance helps with the loss of ISK, but only partially. So having a back up is a good idea, or even multiple identically fit ships if you go into PVP.

In your first days you might keep a few rookie ships around, but soon the response to finding a rookie ship in your hanger is to immediately trash it. The civilian modules are also worthless. Some only work in the one specific mission where you get them. So replace them with other modules as soon as you can afford it.

Note that some of the modules with special names can actually be both cheaper and superior to the regular versions. IF you look under the "variations" tab of the information window you can see the different versions, and a button for the compare tool.

Not quite - they can be reprocessed. Every little helps when you're a newbie.
