How does Supply Chain Management Work?

Hello, I am new to EVE and I thought I'd have an Indy alt (not mining) to help pay for PLEX and because I've always been into crafting in MMO's.

Now with Supply Chain Management it says I can start jobs remotely, so say I am at Rens and I have a BPO and all the materials and the only free slot is four jumps away, do I need the BPO and materials at the station four jumps away but then I could start the job at Rens? Or can I have all the stuff in Rens?

Thanks!

The materials have to be where the lab is, but you can start the job from somewhere else.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

It is essentially the manufacturing version of Scientific Networking, they both work identically to each other, just one is for building the other is for research.

I'll just add a ninja question on top of this: Looking at Industrial ships for hauling stuff, what should I go for?
For the first step seems any race seems ok? As in Bestower / Hoarde / Wreathe / Itterons etc
Would an Orca be decent for when I get into full time production with 9 lines churning stuff out? I don't plan on manufacturing ships (at least not for a loooong time), mostly ship equipment, drones, ammo etc.

Just really depends on your interest really, The Iteron Mark 5 can haul the most in one go, but it has a hefty training time.

A good chart to look at http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Cargo_size

The Badger is good if you want to go for the largest Freighter the Charon.

Note: if you can be bothered to wait, the Iteron 5 is getting it's skill requirements hacked all the way down to Gallente Industrial 1 in the Mayish summer patch. In the meantime you can just use a Mammoth (Minmatar Industrial 4) or just go with a Bestower.

But it sounds like CCP is going to be rebalancing industrials in the same patch, so who knows how that's going to end.

Another option is to use public courier contracts. Pay someone else a small fee to haul everything for you. If you collateralize properly, it's risk free to you.

Yeah, what this guy said. Hauling large amounts of stuff yourself in highsec is for suckers. Letting someone else do the freightering is one of the biggest quality of life improvements you can pay for.

I expect we will see something similar to what happened with mining ships. Each race will have one for a maxed cargo fit, like the itty 5, one for best tank, and probably one for max speed. So three indys each. Not sure what will happen with gallente and its 5 indys.

The nice thing currently about training for the itty 5( holds over 40,000m3) and if you decide it is not big enough, and want a freighter, it is only a couple days training as you already have indy 5. and the Obelisk is the second biggest freighter.

If you doubt you would ever want to train a freighter, the Mammoth is nice and only needs indy 4 and holds almost 30,000m3. Minmatar though has the smallest freighter, but it is also the fastest.

Or if you know you want to go straight for the freighter, caldari Charon has the biggest hold, but the smallest T1 indy holds.

Amarr seems the most balanced with a good T1 indy in the bestower that only needs indy 1, but gets more space with each extra level, and they have a good freighter too if you go for that.
