Newbie - Ships and Fittings

Hey, so new to EVE, started this account a week or so ago, and been reading some guides on everything from planetary interaction to mission running.

Problem is, most of these are outdated, assume that the reader has enough information on the game to themselves decide upon fittings and ship choices, they don't account for the tiericide changes and so on. Reading these forums makes me even more confused, since people never agree on anything and I get an overload of information.

I've got a good enough setup for mining missions, but have ignored combat and combat-related skills completely, so been having a hard time with rats, storyline encounters, distribution missions, pirates etc.

What I'd like to know is which ship, fitting and skills would be superior to be able to tackle missions solo casually, on an overkill level, without having to worry about death or having to warp in-and-out.

ISK is not an issue.

Similar to how Halada's guide(albeit outdated) allowed me to compare ships and see which setup would have been best for mining, I'm looking for one that's PvE-combat-related, so I can see which ship setup would be the relatively "best" for comfortably clearing complexes, completing search and rescure missions and other things like that without a sweat.

there is no ONE good ship for combat missions. as you may have noticed, missions come in five difficulty levels. the rule of thumb is as follows:
level 1 - frigate/destroyer
level 2 - cruiser
level 3 - battlecruiser
level 4 - battleship
level 5 - should not be tried solo (except as a challenge)

which hull you want to choose depends mostly on your preference. are you a fan of shield tanking? missiles? lasers? just pick whatever you think would be a fun ship to fly and go from there.

if you are serious about making money with combat missions, you should look up a good lvl4 battleship (hint: machariel, nightmare, raven navy, vindicator, dominix navy and rattlesnake are good choices) and then develop a skill path that will lead you towards this ship while flying smaller ships in lvl1, 2 and 3 missions.

I should buy an Ishtar.

When you're new, your skills are much more of a limiting factor than your ship. You can train up to fly a battleship in a week or two, but you won't have any combat or tanking skills to go with it.

Personally, I suggest grabbing a combat frigate that matches what kind of weapon system you like and start with it (IE Rifter for Autocannons, Breacher for missiles, Punisher for lasers, Tristan for drones, etc...). Once it is trained to be sufficiently lethal, move up to cruisers and do the same. By taking it slow, the end result will be much more effective and rewarding. A very well fit frigate piloted by a well skilled player can easily take down a BC/BS flown by someone with no skills.

I personally liked to fly level 1 securities with the destroyer you get from the class quests at your starting station. The only problem is without proper skills (and ISK for riggs) to remain it more or less cap stable. But then again, you don't have to equip all 8 high slots with a weapon or use all of them at the same time (you probably will fit, what you find and dont have a 8-group). Probably your best thing will be to try out diffrent stuff and see what you like and then start learning skills for it. However jumping from frig to battlecruiser/-ship is probably not a wise idea unless you are founded by your corp. ;) Though I could get a battlecruiser I currently stick with a cruiser and first improove my basic skills and the requirements for tech 2 stuff.

Remember the princible: don't fly a ship you can't afford to lose. :)

My advice would be to grab a Battlecruiser of your choice, fit a passive shield tank (because it requires very few skills) and run lvl 2s and, once your skills picked up a bit, lvl 3s with it.

That way you might even be able to train BC skill up to V before the summer patch, as a bonus. (I'd still recommend it wihout that but then I'd probably stop at BC IV)

Choose one of the following ships replete with deadspace modules:
Tengu, Machariel, Vargur, Paladin

Don't mention your overkill fit to strangers, as it will make you the next candidate for "ANOTHER CFC BOT DOWN."

Fastest way to overkill : tengu, it starts being efficient at 10M sp while bs are efficient at 15M and more. On the other hand, you wont overkill stuff in a week or two, welcome to eve ^^
(hookbill is overkill for lvl1 and 2 missions)

I'm just kind of curious how ISK isn't an issue for a week old account. You plan on plexing it up?
