My brother is just about to begin his journey in EvE, but I'm well aware that it is a treacherous and confusing universe out there. What simple words of advice would you give him to help him along at the start of his game?

Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.

And contrary to popular belief EVE has sound.

Run ALL tutorials.

Don't fly what you can't afford to loose

Trust nobody, not even your brotherP

Be friendly and open minded and ask questions. With that you will get loads of good replies.

EDIT:

Don't come to the forums whining. Just cause he can't do something like he wants doesn't mean the game is broken.

If it looks like a great opportunity, it's probably a trap.
Missions are unimportant and nothing more than a career. So is mining, as well as being boring.

If you are seeing a deal in the market check to see if there is a minimum buy amount. If there is it is very possible a scam (see margin trading scams)

Make sure your clone is up to date

Use EVEMON (google it) to plan your training (it also reminds you to update your clone).

Never use the 'trade window' , insist on using a contract instead (they only cost 10,000 isk)

Don't dual tank (the only exception is using a damage control module).

Learn at least the very basics of the Directional Scanner (set range to max, angle to max and scan while looking for combat probes and other ships)

Do the Career Agent missions for free ships and skillbooks.
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Career_Agents

Don't use both short range weapons and long range weapons on the same ship. You'll end up doing less damage at both ranges.

Learn from your mistakes. You will lose ships, learn from that. You will be taken advantage of, learn from that. Your path in EVE is your choice, however someone else's path is to profit from you, learn from that. Fly safe, pay attention, fly what you can afford to lose. And in closing, if you lose a ship, or isk, or anything remember that you are at least partly at fault, and never whine in the forums.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

Silly me for forgetting it in my first reply.

And actually ashamed nobody else didn't mention it.

The most important thing in EVE is....

having fun while playing.

So, play in such way that YOU are having fun. If this does mean others say you are playing it wrong, ignore them.

Dont try to explain everything to him or show it to him right away. One of the mistakes i have done over and over trying to get real life friends involved is that i constantly try to explain everything at once which has just left them feeling overwhelmed and takes the fun out of atcually exploring the options on their own. If he asks questions, answear them, but dont try to push things on him. Do as other epeople have suggested and have him run the tutorials, get blown up a couple of times and give him a bit of ISK so he can play on the market and dont feel he is back to 0 when he looses his first destroyer/cruiser/whatever.

Good luck Smile

Don't worry too much about blowing up.

Always assume you're gonna blow up on any given venture, and plan for it.

When someone blows you up, send them a message and ask 'em about why you lost. Most of them will tell you.

This, 1000x.

To add though:

PVP is everywhere, even Miners PVP against each other, they just do it without weapons. Do not join EVE expecting any breaks from anyone.

For got to add in my first post:

There is no such thing as non-consensual PvP in EVE; the second you log into the game you have agreed to the possibility of being blown up by another player.

And it is just pixels so don't be afraid to lose anything since you can almost always get it back.
