Ship 'Wear and Tear' ?

There's no doubt that the ship s in EVE look phenomenal, but i can't help but think that a bit of dirt or turret fire might find its way to the hull of your shiny ship?

These accumalative dirt or burn marks, whatever the persistent graphics will be, could be removed for free at stations at the will of the player, I personally would love to have a ship that looks like its been in the wars without actually being a floation wreck Big smile.

I post this as a suggestion to the Dev teams, as I think it would add a sense of reality. Of course it's more work for them and not a crutial part of EVE online but nevertheless, not a pointless suggestion.

Thanks to all replies and/or suggestions.

Because you repair your ship.
You could go get your ship shot into deep hull and have it on flames all the time, but since it seems like you dont, I guess its just not really that important and doesnt really make sense anyway.

I'm not saying anything life threatening just a bit of wear that's aesthetic, not actual real physical hull damage :-)

Just like it's implied that pilots poop and pee and eat and sleep, it's implied that you (as an intarwebs spaceship pilot) perform routine maintenance and repair on the thing you fly around in a vacuum all day.

Heard someone say "suspension of disbelief" somewhere today...

That, and it's a game. Relax, Nancy.

But since you're in a pod, you don't need to do any of those things.

The nanites take the scarring and excess carbon off the hull in the process of repairing it.

Watch more of the fanfest videos (I think it was) CCP is aware of it and has some new tech in the pipes that will show actual battle damage. Expect it Soon(TM).

Yes it would look cool, but honestly I cant remember the last time i wasnt zoomed out and only staring at the tactical overlay and little purple and red dots moving.

ok i can.. it was the time i forgot to turn on the AB and i got pointed by that darn proteus and died.

I think the biggest issue is with rendering that, individually, fo revery ship on the field. With 1000+ people on grid, that would be an enormous amount of extra server-side work just to render all of their individual levels of wear.

They could, of course, just put the wear on your ship, so it could be handled client-side...but where's the fun in that?

My ships normally go boom so quickly during combat that i wouldnt have time to see if ive got any "burn marks". I do notice plenty of "skid marks" tho just before i go boom P

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly..........

how about a veterancy system where your ship will show graphical changes as it survives multiple battles versus other players, an elite ship that hasnt been destroyed for long time while still getting kills could even gain additions to its actual model

you could look at someones ship on grid and gain additional insight into ur opponent making the tactical side of the game slightly deeper

yeh it would be hard to render and implement Question

Although it doesn't have much practical value, I'm always in for something prettier ^^

When I opened this topic, that's kind of what I was imagining. A while back, I had a main roaming ship of mine that had survived a lot of engagements. I was starting to get attached to the thing, even though when it blows up I could just buy a new one. It would be cool to see some graphical indication of its long life (burn marks, etc.).

It would be very very cool to see such things, But much like the WiS, there are far more important things for devs to spend time on that will actually improve the game, not just look cool.

Easy, once your ship hits structure, its model changes to its Minmatar corrolary. Minnie ships already look like they just got back from a Burn Jita event.

BOOM, battle damage.
