These shots were actually taken in space and not edited in any way:

It is a default target frame of a locked target.

Dark shadow, a semi-transparent backdrop or any other fix to make text readable atop bright areas of space would be much appreciated.
I finally had to make this post after losing a PvP battle seemingly because I couldn't find out what target actually had how many HP without turning my camera a dozen times.

clearly this is a problem... art design seems to be winning over functionality. unless they intend for white clouds to be a visually annoying game mechanic. Your best bet is probably just to zoom way out.

The challenge is not identifying the problem, the challenge is coming up with a reasonable compromise which is attractive yet achieves the goal. (and CCP prioritizing it, of course)

1) They could make some kind of psudo-XOR shader, to invert light HUD pixels into dark shades when on a light background.

2) They could make a tasteful alpha dark "backdrop" for the text.. though it might be ugly.

what is your solution?

Protip: 100M ISK per hour is about $3US an hour.

well mine would be a simple semi-transparent backdrop, just as pinned window backdrops.

"design winning over functionality" is highly conflicting with "Your best bet is probably just to zoom way out" :D but I guess you realized that

zooming out to see some space wallpaper with moving blue, yellow and red boxes on it is the usual way of efficient EVEing, which has finally been dogable without losing too much control by camera tracking for some ships imo.

I agree this would fix the problem, but I think it might be ugly and distracting. It might not be too bad if it was strictly black-in-color, so it was essentially "invisible" against the black background of space.
