Any thoughts on what sort of fitting to deal with the pirates there and give me a chance of eluding PvP if it arises.

Currently use 2 Hobgoblin, 2 Miner and 1 Salvage drone.

What Salvage drone skill would I need to be to salvage .5 pirates?

.5 mining - fit buffer mods (Medium shield extender, invulns, etc). No one likes to kill retrievers, its never going to be profitable to do so.

.4 and below mining - self destruct your ship. No amount of fitting on a retriever is going to allow it to survive even a frigate coming up and deciding to blow it up. The only exception is buffer w/ a point, and a cyno fitted in the high, with a titan and support fleet sitting nearby to jump on anyone stupid enough to attack a retriever that isn't using a mining laser...

In .4 (and below), you really want a Venture. As prey, it has fast legs and can run away very fast when predators arrive (the built-in +2 warp stab helps to bravely advance in the rearward direction).

In "empire," for your retriever, you may want to fit a number of medium core defense extenders (rigs that add to shields), an adaptive invulnerability (a mid slot item that adds resists) and a damage control (that "suitcase thing" which adds shield and armor resists when turned on). Maybe a nanofiber to help bravely run away. For drones, hobgoblins should help handle most rats.

If you are in a region where people can shoot at you (as in, you get wardecked a bunch, or you like to mine where folks gank a lot), I'd go with a procurer. In null, I usually mine in a procurer - it has enough survivability to get away from belt rats (which come in battleship size where I mine) or to survive while players think they can blow me up (and corp mates arrive to deal with the problem).
