12-boxing EVE (feedback on computer setup)

So I'm considering building a machine to 12-box EVE.

Basic configuration is: http://i.imgur.com/3dEtE.jpg

  • EVGA Classified Mobo
  • 2x Quad Core i7 Intel Xeon 3.6GHZ
  • 96GB DDR3 1600 (12 x 8GB)
  • 6x Nvidia GTX 680s
  • 2x 512GB OCZ SSDs, RAID 0 for the OS and most commonly used applications
  • 4x 1TB WD Velociraptors, RAID 0 + 1 for storage
  • 3x monitor stands with 4x ASUS 23" LED LCDs on each one. Each video card powers 2 monitors.

Thoughts? Feedback? Will this be sufficient to 12-box EVE, or are there any improvements I should make?

Shocked I wish I had $6k to throw into a videogame.

why stop at Quad Cores? If you're building a server with that much RAM and video power, you might as well go with 2x 8 core processors. The extra cores might help a bit.

Edit: Also, you might want to either get a 10gb NIC, or invest in add on NICs to make sure you aren't clogging your NIC.

I go well with Quafe...

i'm guessing this is way overkill, since i can quad box with a 5-year old machine composed of a single core 2 quad processor, 4 gb of ram and one GTX 570.

Somebody needs to find some friends..ASAP.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

you could do this for a lot less with 3 video cards(not in SLI), a single cpu and 32GB of RAM... no raptor (cannibalize what you already have as bulk/slow storage) Reduce RAM capacity but increase RAM speed.

put 6 monitors in portrait, 2 clients per screen at their minimum 1028x800. 2 clients per screen, 2 screens per video card

Your video card configuration is very dated. The nVidia 4xx and 5xx supported only two monitors per card. The 6xx supports 3-4 monitors per card. Get something like 650Ti or higher card that has 3-4 monitor connectors. So you really need 3 or 4 video cards, not six.

Of course he does. Big smile

Some people take their hobbies rather seriously. This is actually moderate compared to what some hobbies can cost.

Yes, I've selected the 680 actually. So rather it's the 650 that's dated.

Yeah, it's not like I'm buying a super yacht or a punkin chunker, really. I have a cousin who's invested $60k in a home audio/video setup so this is really rather moderate in comparison.

Never mind the PC setup, how the hell do you control 12 at once?

Overspecced. I can just about 12-box on a 5 year old computer that was mid-range when it was new. That setup should be able to run 100 or more. If you use ISBoxer there's no real scalability problems - if you had the PC for it you could run a thousand clients.

I like your enthusiasm.

But, the fact you need others to provide you with positive reinforcement to define you is...telling.

In other words, I suspect you already knew the answer, because anyone who is willing to spend $6k (regardless of whether it is on credit or 100% disposable income) would research the effort-to-gain ratio.

You can argue this post is that, but I doubt it is.

Apologies if my supposition is incorrect, but there is a reason why middle-aged men buy sports-cars.

You are pissing away money with RAID0 SSDs and using velociraptors if you have sizeable SSDs. Use it for better CPUs.

Also, you should look into 7970s rather than 680s.

This is more than enough to 12-box eve, but you already knew that.

the configuration is wrong in a troll-ish kind of way, because the motherboard won't fit all 6 of those video cards. it has 7 pci-e slots, but the cards are double-slot width, so. 3 max. and the RAM is oddly budget-bin and mismatched. kinda weird.

could be serious, could be troll. meh
