So i create another alt and realise the new passwords have to have a number with them.
Then i realise my older toons are the old style, just plain old letters :)

So i ask, who is old school and who is new school?

Solo 4 Life.1v1 always honored, flying without booster alt since Oct 2010. No ransoms honored even if offered :)

Am I still old school if I used numbers and letters in the old days?

This.

Isn't this 'say if your passwords aren't alphanumeric so you can be an easier target for password-cracking bots'?

Probably not, considering it's impossible to get an account name just knowing the name of a character on it.

Passwords made up of a bunch of words are a lot easier to remember and type. Perhaps not quite so secure as a totally random alphanumeric password, but so much easier to work with, while remaining secure enough to stop a brute force (with limiting on the server side. If they can lay their hands on the hashs, you're screwed, regardless)

17+ character special-mixaplhanum password is nowaday almost unbreakable even with x-tera sized rainbow tables backup :) ... on the other side, passwords shorter than 8 characters can be breaked faster than you read this post...

That's why all my passwords are now "passw0rd" instead of "password".

My Eve password has 64 bits of entropy. I consider that "good enough" for an online service where the database is salted/hashed and there's rate limiting on password attempts/sec.

My "offline" password for stuff has 240 bits of entropy. I consider that "good enough" for an encryption algorithm with 256 bits of keyspace where the attacker has unrestricted access to the encrypted file.
