Buddy invites and rewards from other players - worth it?

Hello, i'm completly new to the eve universe and playing a normal 14 day trial the fourth day as i stumbled over the "Buddy invites and rewards from other players" thread. (I read some other threads the last days but always oversaw that specific one -.-).

At first i was like - oh **** and couldn't really believe it and thought i have to start a new character, because who doesn't want 400 million isk? I was thinking it has no downside, but then i went on becoming sceptical, at first i have to start a new account and a new character but i don't really want to because i already developed a connection to my own character, i like him and how i designed him - and also i would lose 4 to 5 days of skilling time and as i thought more, i also asked myself - would the 400M isk really lead to more fun or are they preventing me from doing very important first experiences and are they costing me the fun of developing my character? It somehow feels like cheeting, but on the other side that can just be bad excuse to not start a new account because i refuse to believe that i made a mistake and i'm better off taking the money?

The time for the decission is now but i just can't decide if i should make a new account or not...

In the end, 4-5 days worth of skill training isn't that big a deal, and the 400m (if you get it - I believe players aren't allowed to scam with those invites, but I could be wrong) is a nice bonus.

Keep in mind, you should still go through the tutorials, so you wouldn't really be missing anything. You just end up with more cash than someone else would. (Consequently, going out and buying stuff just because you can also can mean you'll lose things because you shouldn't be flying them, yet, but if you're smart, it's a great way to get a leg up while you try to figure out what it is you want to do in this game.)

nobody will be able to decide for you but maybe this will help you with your decision:
- four days training time are not a big deal; the eve population usually thinks in months, if not years.
- on the other hand, i can understand your attachment to your char very well. i myself cannot imagine using a char that i did not create myself, although i easily have the ISK to buy a few good ones.
- 400mil will make your life a lot easier. just to put it into perspective: a well fit cruiser is around 25mil and a full set of +4 attribute implants is about 100mil.
- most eve players end up having more than one account, some of them have literally dozens. maybe you should consider getting a buddy invite for a second account and creating a second char on that.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Something similar happened to me too. I started on the 14 day trial and didn't know about the Buddy Program. I was in less than a week though, before I got a new account. At least at that point I knew I wanted to keep playing.

And I'll echo a few things others have said. A few days training time isn't much, really. After a week or two you may not even notice. The other thing is that I don't have to worry about paying for ship insurance (which I didn't buy at all in my first account) or replacing ships or blown-up modules. And, you should also be able to pretty quickly get to a point where you can use the +3 implants and reduce skill training time. It won't reduce it by much, but it will reduce it.

Well, if you want my opinion and I did the exact same with a RL friend who started with a normal trial account

1. Recreate your character (if you want the same name, first biomass this one).
2. 4-5 days of training isn't much missed.
3. If you think that those 400mil would spoil your "new to the game and want to experience stuff" feeling, make a 2nd character on your account and give him that 400mil. Use him as a savings character, only take the ISK when you really really really need it. This means that if you really need it, you have some spare ISK tugged away while on your main character you can still experience the game like you didn't have 400mil ISK.

All your answers clearly point at one direction - make the new account.

I really thank you all for helping me making the decision. Now, also after waiting some hours to clear my head, it is clear to me that i will make a new account.

In the end maybe it is possible to get my 4 days back if i invest a part of the money in implants, but unfortunately i couldn't really find a number how much they boost your skill training time really ...

The formula for skill training speed is:

skillpoints / minute = primary attribute + 1/2 secondary attribute

Each skill has 2 attributes listed, and those are the attributes that govern the speed at which you train that skill.

So if you're curently a newly created character with attributes 17 17 17 17 16, you'll gain on average 25 points per minute. Now, if you add +3 implants, that's 20 20 20 20 19 = average 30 points per minute, which is a 20% improvement. 5 days of training become 4 days.

Once you've spent a couple months training the variety of support and ship skills that you need (frigates, destroyers, cruisers, weapons for them, engineering electronics etc), you can switch to focused attribute remaps: Per/Wil for training ship and weaponry skills, and Int/Mem for training support and industry skills. You should do these focused skill plans once you find that you need to train several skills to level 5 in order to progress (because they are prerequisites for stuff you want).

i have to correct the post above on the numbers: you start out with 20 20 20 20 19 which means +3 implants will only give you a 15% boost.

also, if you intend to fly combat ships in any form, i would advise you to instantly remap for 24 intelligence and 24 perception. most combat related skills have either intelligence or perception as the primary attribute, so this remap will help you get the foundational skills in all categories up quickly. in a few months, when you know what you are doing, you can use one of your bonus remaps to implement whatever skill plan you come up with by then.
