I'm finding that the few missions I've done so far have been absolutely terrible, largely due to missile boats being able to just keep backpedalling, costing me time taking damage to get into range. My max range is about 26km at the moment. Is it worth the capacitor trade-off to put a MWD in rather than an afterburner? My concern is that with lasers I'll run out of cap that much easier with out that additional 25%.

My skills aren't great as I'm only a month and a bit into EVE, but I can't imagine an extra 5% velocity that I'd get with Spaceship Command V would be the saving grace I'm after. Most of my relevant skills are at least level IV.

Use Beam lasers. Also, check out some of the different ranges available with different crystals.

I'm using beam lasers at the moment, the second most expensive tech 1 variant (Can't remember the name for the life of me) and ultra violet crystals until I'm 17km away at which point I swap to Multifrequency. I may have to invest in some longer range crystals for these awful missile boat missions and just put up with the crappy damage I guess.

So you're running against missile boats? That probably means Guristas. And that probably means EM damage makes them giggle like Tickle Me Elmo. And the fact that longer range crystals tend to have a higher EM component means no real gain.

Rather, you could try fitting a scripted tracking computer (range scripted if that wasn't obvious). Then you can use shorter range (and higher thermal component) crystals at longer range -- which might help.

That's right, no idea why the hell a hi-sec amarr mission threw me against guristas. I'll look into that tracking computer thank you, how does the scripting work though if you don't mind answering a newbie question or three.

A script is just an ammo that you drop into modules like the tracking computer, and it will never be consumed. Modules usually have more than one script they can use that you can switch on the fly while doing your normal combat thing. Scripts alter the behavior of the module. They are in the market under ammunition I think.

You can buy one of two scripts for tracking computers (optimal range or tracking speed). When the TC doesn't have either loaded it bonuses both. When you load optimal range you get no tracking benefit but the range (both optimal and falloff) bonuses are doubled. Vice versa with the tracking speed script.

I've never really liked using the mwd for missions, the cap penalty makes them really hard to use efficiently, it's going to make your ship/fit more skill dependent if you go for the mwd.

I think you just need to work on your skills, and get use to the changes in level 3 missions compared to level 2 missions. You can train navigation skills the improve the speed of your ship, or gunnery to improve range and tracking of you turrets. You can also train some drone skills, both light and medium drones are very useful in level 3 missions.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

Oh, I know that one, Pithum Infernos tend to run away, making chasing them down tedious. Get Beam lasers, then grab Microwave, Standard and Multifrequency (they've all got higher thermal component than previous version, while roughly corresponding to long, medium and short range). Note optimal and falloff ranges for each of these. Start with Microwave, then switch to Standard when you reach roughly middle point between its falloff and optimal. Do the same for Multifrequency once you get closer.

Now that this is out of the way, the fit: use an afterburner, but invest into navigation skills, in particular Acceleration Control and Navigation. This will allow you to dictate range. Also invest into the Sharpshooter skill, which increases your optimal - with medium beams and a single Tracking Computer with range script, you'll be able to reach about 50 km out, more than enough to handle the evil missile cruisers :)

Yeah the infernos and the silencers and erasers and all the others all led me on a merry chase in all three pockets : / ill give the tracking computer a shot tomorrow, reaching out 50km with beams would be handy as hell. Thanks guys.

On this, my drone skills are actually passable as i flew an arbitrator before this with good effect. Frigates in level 3 missions seem to like molesting my drones constantly though. As in they aggro on me, i deploy drones and instantly they start getting shot up. Seriously not cool

The aggro mechanic was changed so only elite frigs and cruisers are going to attack light drones, i don't know how often you encounter elite ships in level 3 missions, but just make it a priority to kill them first and you can freely deploy light drones.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

Doing Guristas missions in an Amarr ship?!!? Just say no!!! You want go against Blood Raiders, and Sansha instead. Check the faction you are up against and refuse missions against NPC factions you are poor against. I recommend find some where with a couple of agents of the right level so you can bounce between them if they are giving crap missions.

If you are getting a lot of Guristas and the like you are most likely in Caldari space. Just go to Ammar space for better rats. Last I checked this was controlled for the most part by the region you are in.

PS- This sort of thing is why most mission runners fly Caldari or Minmatar ships for missions as you can just switch ammo types based on the NPCs you are facing. Also remember that your drones have a damage type as well so be sure to bring the right drone type for the mission.

I haven't had any cruisers shoot at my lights, but they shoot at my meds and some frigs shoot at my lights. I heard there was an update to your quote and that only elite frigs will switch targets to lights now, which seems accurate.

i've had non-elite belt rats switch to my miner's drones. in missions i can confirm that it's at least mostly (probably exclusively) the elite frigates that kill your drones. i have adapted my mission strategy to include throwaway t1 drones to feed to the elite frigates so that they stop bugging me with their ewar.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Go Heavy Modulated with Navy Infrared... decent beam range (30k-ish)... just check your ranges before you dive in, and try to keep everything at-range. Swap crystals out as needed; reload time is like one second, so you won't see any delays like with missiles and projectile. I wouldn't use an MWD myself because if burns the precious cap you need for a lazor boat; just use AB.
