What Inspired Your Avatar?

I see a lot of topics about avatars. Hate, rate, what are they thinking... but I'm wondering, why did you assemble this particular bit of pixels and take a snapshot of it?

I'm sure there are plenty who just fiddled with the character creation. Or others who made their avatars look like themselves. But eh, what can I say, I'm bored, at work, and interested to hear some stories.

Only fair I go first.

First of all, I'm not (surprise!) an angry looking black woman with dreadlocks. I'm actually a rather jovial white man with a buzz cut. Harley's look is inspired by, like many of my MMO avatars, by someone who impacted me in life.

I met "Haley" (actually Jen) shortly after college. I was living in a two-room apartment (yes, two rooms. Bedroom, livingroom. Plus a tiny "bathroom" and a kitchenette that was IN THE LIVING ROOM) working at a Burger King. I had met Jen through my roomate (yup, two people in that cramped apartment) Now, skipping a load of unimportant details, Jen and her girlfriend, Rocca were kicked out of their old apartment and needed a place to stay. Against out better judgement, we crammed all 4 of us in an apartment barely big enough for 1.

We lived in a bad part of town. One night, on her way home from work, Rocca was jumped by some locals (none of us knew it at the time, but she owed a local drug dealer money) As she limped home, they followed her. They were determined to get their money. Our only defense was a hunting rifle I owened (I'd lived in the Adirondaks before college, and occasionally I still go out to hunt, though its lost a bit of its lustre for me) in the back of the house locked up. Jen, without missing a beat, jumped the first person she saw and started wailing on him, giving me just enough time to get to my rifle.

She was stabbed three times defending her girlfriend before I returned with the gun. The crowd ran, and we got Jen to the hospital. Though I've sinced upgraded my standard of living, nicer house, nicer job, MUCH nicer town, I never forgot Jen. So when I was making a big, tough Brutor, I decided... why not pattern her after the ballsiest person I ever met?

Simple, I modeled my avatar after myself, tried to get him as close as possible. (until boredom set in and I just hit "next")

That went as far as the outfit actually, I changed to this current look last week. Before that I went with the blue Quafe shirt and a black vest (no shades), because I happen to have that IRL as well. :) Had that look since, the dawn of time basically. ("Incarna")

That got a bit old though, and I felt a bit silly in a t-shirt and a vest, hence the new look. Not that this looks any less silly (looks like a cop/guard or something), but at least it's something new.

Sculpting and facial expression stayed the same, though it seems I answered "yes" to resculpting and thus wasted that opportunity. Fffffff....

Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

It was initially based off of a character in a very shameful comic I work on in my spare time.

Care to post a concept drawing or two of your comic?

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Well, my char is named after my main in wow, who was a druid).

So with the old CC I decided to make her spiritual (Minmatar - Vherokior - Mystics): http://oldportraits.eveonline.com/Character/662698986_256.jpg

Then tyrannis struck (that was the patch with the new CC IIRC) and poor Miz lost her pretty eyes and became rather plain looking ,no more fancy jewelry. So my first attempt was to make her look decent and make her eyes look ok (I actually ended up hiding the eyes behind a pair of shades). Later I started to give her an unique identity but I still dislike the eyes.

My current avatar is an experiment. Not the usual apearance.

This character was inspired by my desire to make a pirate like character. I like Jack Daniels, and Calico Jack. so there ya go. My main's name is one I have used in every MMO I play starting back to my Jedi Grind days in Star Wars Galaxies (oh the memories) to WoW, Silk Road Online, 9 Dragons, SWTOR, GW2, and Eve.

I go well with Quafe...

I got the inspiration all over the place really, but the main inspiration came from this quote: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." which appears throughout history as well as in books and movies.

Other sources for inspiration came from White Wolf's pen and paper Vampire RPGs, Holistic Design's pen and paper Fading Suns RPG and Peter Chung's character Γ†on Flux.

Tried to get my new one to resemble my old one somewhat.

I'd just read England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond by John Savage. An excellent book that really fired me up for punk again, the way I'd been in younger and wilder days. So when I created an EVE character, the only choice was a Minmatar rebel with a punkish hair and tattoos. The old avatar generator created better punks than the new one, though. http://www.eve-avatars.com/?telegram%20sam

I like you.

Started flying Minnie and grinding up rep with them myself for the very same reason, until I realized that that perma-FOTM of Minmatar becomes more and more annoying and Amarr is true to the core punkrock.

I tried to make mine look like me but it only works from this certain angle because of the low amount of variety available when sculpting the jaw / chin and whatnot on the characters. I'm still not happy with it. CCP also need to give us some hats to wear and more variety of hair styles for me to be happy.

Ares is in one way named after me but in another way his names have their own meaning.

So it's just me.

i originally tried to base it off of myself. but...after screwing around for awhile and not getting the results i was aiming for...i gave up. maybe it had something to do with the race i picked. idk. so i finished it. it ended up being part me and part unique creation. i think it's better looking than i am. Sad a bit thinner and more toned. better shape than i am in general. gah...i'm sort of jealous...

Eurydia Vespasian I'm sure you are harder on yourself than others are and are really in fact better looking than your avatar... God doesn't make junk.

Angelina Jolie once said that she was jealous of Lara Croft set of pixels. Because her husband at the time (Billy Bob Thornton) was always playing Tomb Raider, and every time she walked past him, Lara and her butt were on the screen. Smile Then Angelina ended up getting the part of Lara in the Tomb Raider movie.
