Hi there,

i am about to make the decission which dreadnaught i want to fly. I can choose between the Caldari Phoenix and the Amarr Revelation.
I think both ships are tempting. I did some research and almost everytime when i am looking at killmails with dreadnaughts the only 2 dreadnaughts which are used in Eve are the Moros (Gallente) and the Revelation (Amarr).

My question is why?
Is the shield tank of dreadnaughts worse than armor tanking?
Or is it because the Naglfar and and Phoenix use Citadel Torpedos so the damage is not immedeatly appiled?
I searched for threads with this topic but couldn't find anything interessting.
Maybe somebody can help me?

The Phoenix is considered a bad dread because of capital sized missiles. They do full damage only to stationary targets and super capitals. This means moving carriers and all subcapital ships will be hit by full missile damage with massive web + TP support only. But this kind of support works for turret dreads as well. They have the ability to blap smaller ships - something missiles cannot do.

Edit: also range. XL torps go ~60km. After that they do zero damage. Turrets have more flexibility in range because of different ammo types + falloff. They do less damage with range ammo and/or in falloff - but they do damage at all.

A missile dread needs to fit missile range or velocity rigs to get more range - at cost of tank. Alternatively they could use cruise missiles, but then they are subpar at close range.

As per the abve, Rev rocks and Phoenix can't apply dps easily unless you are hitting POS, sieged dreads or supercaps.

Given this, if you can go either then there's no real benefit to the Phoenix over the Rev atm.

If you plan a lot of use in the ship, the Rev will save you a fortune in ammunition costs over time.

As universally useless as the Phoenix is compared to the other dreads you need to dig a little deeper into the purpose for flying each ship to help you decide. You also need to look into the infrastructure you operate in as well.

Do you bash towers a lot?
Do you like grinding structures?
Do you want to be worth a damn in a fight involving sub capitals?
Do you live in a wormhole?
If so, does this wormhole have any weather that would help push the balance one way or the other(Pulsar, Wolf-Rayet)?
Do your fleets often revolve around shield or armor?
The latter on the list is not very important because once you hit that button you are a world unto yourself until you come out of siege. But if you do get into trouble and survive your cycle, its nice to know the reps headed your way are what you are actually tanked for.

All things being equal and for pure flexibility, until Fozzie gets around to fiddling with capitals in a few years, I would go with the Revelation.
