My first four hours in EVE

I have played World of Warcraft (guildless) for over a year, finally reaching Level 14. It has a steep learning curve, and a big grind.

In my first four hours of EVE play today, this community has been much more helpful and welcoming than WoW for a year. The EVE learning curve is everything XKCD promised, and so far it looks like the fun will be in proportion to the investment. Ask me in 14 days if I am still here!

lol - WoW is so simple and 'back in the day' the 'grind' was the game - and many of us liked it that way. You ARE joking on the lvl 14 thing right? I mean - that takes about 2-10 hours at most.

Anyhoo - hope you like it here - the Help Channel is awesome if u haven't found it yet.

Wait, WoW and a steep learning curve? When, where and what is your age?

A year to level 14. Did you play 2h at start and then another 8h a year later? Level 14 and 1 year is hardly a hard goal

I played WOW for about 3 months got to level 38 and I did enjoy it there was something missing couldn't put my finger on it.

So I tried Eve 14 day trial about 3 months ago and loved it but when my trial ran out I was gutted I couldn't create a permanent account due to work commitments but now I have time and signed up yesterday, god I missed this beast of a game.

Advice try for a month before u decide because the trial version stops u from doing certain things.

Enjoy

I feel like something is missing here. Like a 1 at the beginning of 14, who knows

Just started EVE last night at the constant requests of a friend. I'm more than planning to pay for this game :)

I've never really been a gamer. About a year ago i did the WoW free trial. It was OK but there was no way I was going to pay for that game. It did wet my whistle though so i started poking around the internet for something better. I settled on battlestar galactica online, I'm a sci-fi fan so it was a good match but the devs are just terrible. Big Point can blow me. One day, while stating just as much on the BSGO forum some one said "its a free game dude, if you want something that doesn't suck then pay for Eve." I had never heard of it so I started the free trial expecting another top-down space shooter type game and found m new addiction. That was back in June. I never looked back.

Sorry for the tl;dr story time there. The point is welcome to the best game ever.

Troll? I am flattered! The truth is, I am a casual player, no matter how much I want to be a hardcore gamer. I will never be an accurate, fast twitcher, so I lean towards the RPG genera.

I played Wow about 30-40 hours (solo) over the last year. I have moved from level 7 to 14 in the last month, so I am getting better... but nothing to brag about.

What does the Eve trial prevent me from doing? So far, it is just hard to play. Much harder than Wow. Good thing I am starting to "get" it. I just brought up an Alt, and it was fun redoing everything that Grondi did wrong. Unfortunately the Alt can't learn, because Grondi is undergoing training right now. I suppose I will figure that out soon enough.

Thanks for all your replies and encouragement. One of you on the chat said: "even if we are enemies, welcome and good luck." That is classy!

I have tons of questions, most of which will be sorted out with practice. Here are two I should throw out:
1) How important is it to join a corp?
2) what questions should I be asking!

Thanks!

Welcome Grondi Mar!

I'm ISD Athechu from ISD:STAR (Support, Training and Resources). ISD:STAR is apart of the official Volunteer Program from CCP. We (STARs) dedicate our time to helping new players out learning the game and answer questions you might have.

To answer your questions:

1) http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Trial_account_limitations <- Trial Account Limitations tells you what you can't do basically.

2) You can only be training 1 pilot on an account at a time. Most players usually expand into 2 accounts so they can have 1 as a "Main" and a 2nd as an Alt (alternative) account to use. The reason mostly for this is so they can train 2 pilots at the same time instead of limited to just 1.

3) Most people will say it's very important as a lot of this game is community oriented. But there are people who play solo and don't join a corporation (or if they do they make their own and just make it a 1 man corporation). Personally I enjoy meeting new people and flying with others brings a different aspect to the game. There are parts of the game where you can't do solo (unless you got a bunch of alt accounts).

4) I would say check out http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Rookie_Help_Channel_FAQ it covers 90% of the questions we get in the Help Channels. But simply if you don't get how something works just ask :)

Well hope it helped feel free to ask more questions :)

Eve has a very forgiving learning curve. Twisted

Here is a helpful Chart comparing it to Wow, and some other older games.

You come to a Questions & Answer forum and then ask which question you should ask?

Really....

1.) Corps can be really important but also a PITA. It depends on you as a player and the corp you join.

2.) How do I give my stuff away (as a replacement question)?

Well, go to assets, select them all, right click them and create contract.

Set the contract to private and type in J'Poll and then hit enter 6 times after that...

EDIT:

Trial accounts are limited in only 1 way. They can't train all the skills in EVE. They can't train industrial ships and anything bigger then a cruiser. This is mainly to prevent throw away alts by veteran players.

And cause everybody is throwing links at you:

Welcome. glad to have another capsuleer.

One of the important questions you need to ask yourself is what do you want to do?
Here is a GAINT chart that shows the professions/activities you can do http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/

I know this all seems confusing but in time you will understand it.

so continuing with what do you want to do. Do you like blowing up stuff? then combat may be your thing. Do you like the thrill of selling something more than you paid for it? Then you could be a trader. Do you enjoy mining asteriods? Then miner is likely your thing. The list goes on and on.

These questions should guide you to what you enjoy to do. If for some reason you still can't figure out what to do. Then get the certificate called Core Competency. Then go out and train everything. one thing at a time.

....BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

seriously?

I recently picked the Game-that-must-not-be-named back up to play with a few friends of mine, and within a month I went from 1 to 56 or so.

And if you think that *modern* WoW has a steep learning curve.....

still think you're a troll, but i'll give you the benefit of the doubt because this is the new players forum.
eve trial just stops you learning a few skills, that's pretty much it.
however, if you upgrade to a full account your remaining trial days are added to your subscription, which means there's no reason not to subscribe if you think you like it.

as for training, pick one character and teach it stuff, if you want an alt make a second account.

as for your questions. joining a corp isn't all that important. i've been in a few and now i'm back in the npc corp. might benefit you as a new player to find a corp just so you can ask people things but meh, i wouldn't say it's that important unless you can find a good one that fits you.
and you should be asking anything and everything. if you don't understand it, ask.

I've never heard of 1 year to level 14 in WoW, thought the impression I got from the OP was played on and off for a year; 30-40 hours of game-time past year just screams they weren't subbed the whole year.

OP: Try to understand what you like and set a goal for that. Missions, trading, mining, PvP, are just a few categories with many many more subcategories of what you can do in this game. This was the reason that got me hooked initially; there was so much that can be done.. do many things you can be. You want to "heal" fleets during Missions/PvP? Go Logistics. Want to be the Han Solo of the Space Lanes, get into a Blockade Runner.

I want to say the biggest problem with being a new player in this game is that so many try to be everything at once and then get discouraged when they suck at it. Try to figure out what you want to do/be and stick with it if you can skill-wise. Honestly, I think Missioning is a great start and can open doors to both various avenues of PvE and PvP.

Abandon all hope ye who x up in fleet
