+1 From me.
Not sure where the UI has room fit it but features that would be helpful.

I hope CCP Sharq and the beautiful CCP Punkturis will consider working on this idea.
I am a bit sad that no filtering options have been planned for the Overview window in Retribution.

I was told about this thread just now so apologies for not replying earlier. Since we are currently active on help chat on TQ because of the Retribution release today I can't go into specifics just now, but I have read the idea and like it a great deal and would like to thank OP for bringing them to light. These ideas would tie well with an iteration to the Overview. I will bring them to the EVE UI group for discussion.

All the best for now and I hope you all like Retribution Big smile

Thank you CCP Arrow.
Knowing that a developer have read this forum couldn't make me happier today. P

Now I just hope the CCP UI group will like the idea too.

I am ready to accept suggestions to make it more integrated but I don't see how I could do it more.
Let's start brainstorming. Smile

There's been some good ideas in F&I and one or two really comprehensive ones. Do a search.... and on the old forums?

By "more integrated", would you like it to be less visible or you would like it to have more options, maybe ?

The overview is the most important UI element in the game - its also the crapest - and it takes up most space. There are so many things wrong with it, its hard to know where to start, but CCP's approach is generally to go at something comprehensively - the risk is that in doing the odd tweak they won't touch it again for years.

  • Much more should be graphical.

  • We should not be limited to one (for example I could have a single column celestial view, next to my detailed PVP view)

  • Tabs are far too annoying, and unintuitive to set up (with consequences for getting it wrong).

  • It is the epitome of spreadsheets in space.

  • Configurable buttons column for common actions appropriate for each object (linked to tab settings), you should never need to right click. Take cans - what do I ever do with them - approach and open. so my cans setting should have those two buttons in the button column. Other people might want warp-to and orbit for cans too.

  • EWAR doesn't live in a proper column, so you can't move it to the front, and there is a risk it gets pushed out of view if your not careful.

  • Colour icons, user definable icons - I want to be able to identify classes of ship easily - I want to use icon X for interceptors and icon Y for logi. A simple pattern match against ship type to set the icon, or the default ones for no matches.

  • A single interface should cover scan/d-scan (with a range slider as a filter), the controls should be in a collapseable panel (like your filters) and results merge with the normal ones in the main table with colouring or some other indicator of where it came from.

  • Bookmarks.....

  • Tactical overlay should link in and provide more (velocity vectors, ability to show multiple modules ranges, follow my overview tabs settings), colouring.

  • My main look and feel wish would be to draw it on space without a window - a title bar is pointless, so are the spreadsheet lines, so is the visible window frame. When transparent it should really be transparent - I need to have it full height in case lots of stuff pops up, but when lots of stuff isn't there it takes up half my screen looking fugly.

  • Tabs are really fugly

  • Angular velocity to 8 significant figures? really? ever see the last one change by itself? Why can't I have a visual speed bar from zero to 'fast' for the velocities (I need to be able to set the definition of 'max', and I'd like it to change colour according to my thresholds - be handy to have a visual cue when something is racing at me at 4000m/s and see when something comes into tracking range without breaking my eyes every time)

  • Columns are always filled in even though data for that column might be pointless - e.g. type for spaceships is handy, the type column for stargates - well, err I can see the icon thanks! This adds to the spreadsheet feel and clutters up the display.

  • Option to collapse alliance/corp into one item

  • Threshhold values for colour/blink highlighting - someone approaching rapidly, someoneone within my guns tracking (as above), at warp distance, at gun distance .... everything visual + detail for when you need the detail.

  • Columns should go away completely when there is nothing in them - say tags - why do i even have a tags column visible when there are no tags set can't it just work this out and hide the column completely?

  • And now your filter suggestion too :-)

  • 1000 papercuts ..... ? more like a billion. Needs a complete redesign

See that post? It's awesome. =3

Whatever is done, the current UI need some love. BTW, a search filter would be, even by himself, anhuge improvement.

    Hello Nyalnara.

Yes, I have read betoli's post, but I don't know how all these changes could look like, ingame. Here is what I would suggest..

    betoli wrote:

==> Dual Overview and maybe More Tabs could help.

    betoli wrote:

  • I like tabs. They help quickly split/filter elements in the Overview. But I agree, they are unintuitive to set up.

Though, one thing annoys me a bit is the slowlyness of the UI : especially after jumping through a stargate or after undocking a station. The game sometimes, doesn't feel really reactive. I am sure some players have lost battles in lowsec/nullsec just because their interface hasn't refreshed quickly enough.

And yes the Overview window does look more or less like an Excel spreadsheet but how could CCP gather and display all these informations quickly ? I haven't the final solution to this issue, but I tend to think players shouldn't have to search for these informations everywhere on the screen. So gathering them all in one window isn't (maybe) the worse idea CCP had.

Here are mockup images for this (betoli's) suggestion:

    New column with action buttons:

    The drop-down menu opened:
    http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/398210buttoncolumnchooseaction.png

Of course, the available actions listed in this drop-down menu would change according to what the player selected (ship, stargate, asteroid...)

The arrow would be there to display the drop-down menu but (to speed up the management of this button during a fight) the player could use his "mouse wheel" over this button to switch the action. In this case he wouldn't have to click the arrow button to change the action.

    I totally agree.

I am not a good player... I don't know yet all kinds of ships. And sometimes, when I see a ship in my "Directional Scan" or in the Overview, I tell myself :
    - hmm.. is it dangerous or not ?
    - is it big or not ?
    - is it a T2 ship ?

I don't know how but being able to quickly know more about a ship could save many players' lives/ships.. Mine first.
Maybe hovering the line in the Overview where the ship is listed, could display the following tooltip :

First the player selects normally the ship (there's nothing new in this image) :
    http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/941564shiptooltipselectship.png

    Then a tooltip appears :

Yes, it would be useful to see our bookmarks in the overview.

hmm...I don't like this idea.. I wouldn't like to see the Overview window without title or window borders.. But it's just my taste.

Agree, the overview at the moment has a lot of functionality but the usability is terrible.

In addition to streamlining the overview interface, EVE should come with good presets for new players that are reasonable defaults for Mining/Travel/PvP/PvE.

I agree, CCP should also add Louis' epic Overview settings :

I like some of these ideas.
Smart Filters should be contextual to your filter. Only filter checkbox options should be displayed that make sense in the context of the filter of the overview tab I am viewing.
I particularly would like to see better integration of the overview and the scanning interface.
