Quick question about POS control

Do I need Starbase Defense Management to just use my POS stuff on auto (guns, ew, ecm, hardeners, etc)?

Anchoring is at III, btw.

The POS will automatically shoot and stuff if you have it setup right. Keep in mind each gun/EW will cycle around to different targets after a little while, so it will not automatically focus fire unless there is only one target. Starbase Defense Management is only needed if you want to control and shoot/EW specific targets. You don't need to do anything besides online for the hardeners to work.

No, you need all that to man the guns yourself.

The POS will "automatically" defend itself according to the settings you put. Er. Usually. POSes are known to be buggy, it's one (more) thing to fix on CCP's long to-do list.

The guns will fire on their own, but you really need to be able to control them.

On their own they are not very effective.

Really is a good idea to train up the Starbase Defense Management skill as soon as possible, especially if you have a POS in low sec or null sec. That way, you can defend it much more effectively. Letting the guns auto cycle to defend itself is really inefficient, especially when there are more than a couple of targets attacking.

All defences have a 30 second target-cycling timer, except for ECM on Caldari towers which has only a 7.5 sec target-cycling timer (= a single jam cycle attempt). It takes a LONG time for POS defenses to lock anything, so they spend most of their time not doing anything other than locking targets. They don't focus-fire either. i.e. POS defences are pretty lousy when not manned.
