What did I see?

You guys wanted it. So I did it.

I hopped in my little Rabbit (Minmitar Slasher) and headed for Null Sec. That's right. I left the safety of Abduban (my normal hang-out- that and Rens). To the person who aced me.... You're welcome :)

How did I fall? Good question- I have no idea.

I was warping along, jumping from gate to gate (NOT using Auto-pilot) and all of a sudden, I flew PAST the next gate like it wasn't even there... I didn't even slow down out of warp until I'd cleared it by over 20km. There was a pirate there in a small ship who instantly locked on and began shooting, but that wasn't really a concern. That ship cost me almost nothing and was stripped down save for an MWD, Overdrive, and Gyrostabilizer.

The other odd thing was the anomaly that my ship DID drop out of warp next to- a pair of really huge blue glowing spheres... I didn't get a good look at them as I tried to turn and make a run back for the gate I'd blown past.

So.... my question is... what did I see? And why did my ship not go through the gate? If I can find that out, maybe I can make another attempt.

Those were warp disruptor bubbles. They will pull your ship out of warp if any part of that blue glowing sphere intersects the line of your warp and is within 100km of the end point of your warp. There are two main ways to deploy these: one is encompassing a gate to stop people warping away from the gate after jumping through, the other is as "drag bubbles" which is what you encountered: the mobile warp disruptor is anchored some distance off the gate to ensure that you cannot simply run for the gate to escape the gate camp.

One way of avoiding warp bubbles is to fly a strategic cruiser with the "interdiction nullifier" subsystem, but that is a very expensive way of flying :)

Sounds like you hit into a scrambling bubble. When navigating in low sec and null -> jump to a moon and then to the next gate. This way they can't predict your movement.

I'm no scientist on this area unfortunately, just my best guess.

No

Not a moon. A Planet.

Moon may have POS with guns.

Otherwise known as the most illogical thing ever, yes I am mad.

POSs take so long to lock anyway, especially if your in a frigate.

This made me happy as well. Maybe there is hope for Hi-sec yet.

To understand what happened, watch this:

Sling bubbles and all that good stuff REAL players have to contend with.

You may not be realising this right now, but you've just won Eve. Congratulations.

welcome to null

you've taken your first step into a larger universe

Mobile warp disruptors come in 3 sizes and they will ruin your day
unless....

basically the deal is every place you can go in a system is between two fixed points, gate to planet, gate to gate and so on
a MWD can be placed anywhere along this path, but are mostly used near an object like a gate or station although I have seen anchored bubbles at mid-points, but they are usually pure fail.

the trick is to create a different path, the drag type of bubble will only catch things on its specific path, so come in from a different angle. The bubble on the gate is worse because you can't really avoid it, and often you can't scan it until its too late.

this is when the perch comes into play, its a handy bookmark you place about 200k off of the gate or station (not inline with anything) so you can safely fly into visual distance to see if its safe, it also avoids the need for flying to moons and planets.

you should know there's also a ship-mounted deployable bubble and a ship-mounted generated type of bubble that can move with the ship generating it.

but you should get frigs to 5 and get cov-ops, then you can virtually travel anywhere and hang out at considerably lower risk

I warp to the planet nearest the gate, and Dscan from there.

Cant wait for POS to be set up away from moons. Then everyone will have theirs at a mid point between gates or planets and gates or sun and gates. Should be interesting navigation in the distant future.

I was thinking that too. Swarm of bubbles at your mid-point gate camp POS... would be pretty funny. Expensive static target though.

Yes, it's wonderful getting yanked out fo warp, halfway to my destination.

Knowing some guy took the time to slowboat out to an area of space, between two warp points, just to drop a bubble.

It's just so dastardly.

Bubbles only work on the same grid as the end of your warp path. Surprised nobody mentioned that yet.
Only way to get them far far away is grid manipulation. Cool

this is why its so comical to see them at midpoints as they flash past your overview
since they are utterly useless

but you don't have to slowboat to do it, just drop a BM while in warp

Well, maybe on a very long warp... but I'd recommend holding it until you've reached your destination
