Freight Containers in Space?

So now that Freighters can jettison, I assume that means you can jettison freight containers.

If a Freight Container is floating through the cosmos, can it have things put into it? Hypothetically let's say for mining. If I were to drop a Freight Can in a belt, could I load it up, come back on my Freighter, and pick it up, or is it unopenable once its in space?

Its the exact same as a jet can only with more room

That was my hope, we're considering trying Freight Can mining (using an Orca to drag jet cans, loading freight cans, then when we're done bring out a freighter to pick the cans up). I didn't want to invest all that time in a Freighter if I couldn't even access the cans outside the Freighter.

Yup I've done it before, you can still access it and what not but it does die after 2 hours just like a standard jet can will, I'd still say it it would be better to mine into the orca directly then when it starts getting full, warp to a freighter thats at a planet, moon or something and transfer it into a freighter can then head back to the belt

That isn't a half bad idea.

The only issue I have is that my Freighter is one of my miners , and I'm afraid that having another character trained just for parking a freighter would cut into resource obtainment more than help.

One idea to give you time before the freight cans pop is to name them the time you jettisoned them, that way you know when two hours are coming up. Personally if you have the finances for a freighter pilot on their own account it is just better for a freighter to sit in system with you, as you don't have to worry about people trying to steal from your cans (granted a bit harder now with crimewatch) or worry about the time limit on cans.

I once podded myself by blowing a huge fart.

So is it two hours from last modification or two hours from placement?

It's AROUND 2 hours from creation (jetting).

And even that 2 hours isn't fixed, containers stay in space for AT LEAST 1.5 hour and usually pop around 2 hours after creation. But don't be surprised if you see a container pop after 1 hour and 50 minutes....

Then there is always the option to make a can, and an hour later make another can and transfer everything to it so that you don't have to worry about it popping unexpectedly.

Freight Cans, not Jetcans.

Freight Cans, not Jetcans.

What's the difference? (newb)

Can you not anchor them to stop them popping?

Also, please do this in low sec, I want a freighter kill :)

Freight Cans are special cans that are held in the cargo bay of a Freighter for organization, they hold up to 250,000 m3 each. As of Retribution they can be jettisoned out into the world, then picked up within so much time before they disappear. So you jettison them with a freighter, come back on your miner with your fleet, mine a ton and load them up, then return with the freighter to pick them up.

Jetcans are created automatically whenever you jettison any item, they hold 27,500 m3.

Nope, they're unanchorable =(
