Gallente or Caldari?

I just started in Gallente because i am a fan of drone boats and i like the ship designs(look wise), but it seemed all the activities and fun are around caldari faction space. After i am done with all the tutorial agents mission, I am already -0.4 with caldari. I read that at -2.0 you basically are lock out of Caldri space. Since i am still new, is it wise just to restart as Caldari, or is it easy to gain caldari faction back up to positive? since Gallente and Caldari are at opposite end what would i loose out if kept both of them neutral or is that even possible? I read some online article and posts here that it doesn't really matter on race but then there's so many new things with eve it seemed that articles and posts could be way out of date?

I am planning doing 60-70% mission running and 30% pvp. not really a sitting there mining astroid kind of a guy.

It's pretty easy to grind your faction ratings back up, and you're really not going to miss anything by going Gallente, you can always train for Caldari ships anyday, although I recommend you training and specializing in Gallente ships first.

But Caldari.... Caldari FTW!

Amarr is stronger with drones now. And they are allied with Caldari so easier to keep your faction standing.

Btw it's -5.0.

-2.0 is only for security and it only locks you out of 1.0 system.

Factions are a one time limit of -5
Security depends on the sec of the system and ranges from -2 to -5

You are thinking Minmatar. amarr boats are nice and gold.

If faction standing really bothers you, do interbus missions.

Interbus are neutral so you don't lose standing with any faction bar the pirate ones.

The trade off is no LP store.

-0.4 isn't a problem.

Just move yourself to Caldari space and live out there, standings by running caldari missions (storylines) will change in a while.

Also, you can negate any faction standing loss / gain very easily:

1.) Don't do storyline missions (you can decline 1 mission for 1 agent every 4 hours without a penalty).
2.) Don't do normal missions that make you shoot faction rats. Each mission will show which type of rat you will be facing. If it's anything other then Gallente, Amarr, Minmatar or Caldari you will be fine. If it's one of those 4, just decline the missions (see statement above about that).

Also you don't have to be a Gallente character to fly Gallente ships. Anybody in EVE can train any ship they want.

I have a Gallente character who only flies Minmatar ships while living in Amarr space....

EDIT:

For locking out of faction space you will need a modified standing that is -5.0 or lower (that is after any social skills are taken into account - these can help a lot).

As for locking you out of space due to sec status:

-2.0 sec status means you will be shot at in 1.0 systems.
-5.0 sec status means you will be shot at in ALL high-sec systems (and makes you free target for players).

Bro, gallente ships are ugly as ****.
Train for Amarr ships ( shiny, future-looking, awesome, laser/drone)
And for Caldari ships ( brutal, movie-looking, railgun/missile epicness)
If you like drones, just get the new Amarr destroyer, and then you can get Arbitrator, which is also an amazing drone boat.
I'm getting one really soon ^_^ I'm actually going to construct it, which is even more epic.

just taking missions that are kill pirates, drones or mercenaries only slows the loss process down.

there is the slow, painful method of maintaining good standings

when standing with 1 faction starts to get low,
pick 1 corp from that faction
mission for that corp
complete non-faction storylines

rinse and repeat for each desired faction

it is a 2 steps forwards & 1 step back process
hence slow

With the new NPC AI I would not recommend drone boats for PVE combat unless you are feeling particularly masochistic.

You will be hunted in Caldari space if your standing with them drop below -5.0 AFTER diplomacy skill is applied.
Faction standing lower than -2.0 also prevents the use of agents above level 1. (making it a tedious job to get to the storyline missions to get standings up again).

There is however nothing that prevents you from taking your Gallente Self into Caldari space an seek your fortune there.

Your standing isn't low enough to worry. If it bugs you, train Diplomacy.

Diplomacy 0: -0.400
Diplomacy 1: 0.016
Diplomacy 2: 0.432
Diplomacy 3: 0.848
Diplomacy 4: 1.264
Diplomacy 5: 1.680

Diplomacy only works for negative standings. Connections works for positive standings.

Effective standing = current standing + (10 - (current standing)) * 0.04 * skill level

Between the missile nerf and drone massacre last expansion, it's a good time to look at Minmatar.

-0.4 is easily fixable.

They are still tuning them. Had no problems running missions with my Myrmidon over the last few days.

Yes, HAMS and torps got nerfed... oh wait no, they're great now! Only thing that got rebalanced (it's not a nerf if it was OP) are heavies, which is fine. Also drones got massacred, oh wait they're not! All you have to do is not be an afk lazy idiot and they're fine.

Now, more than ever, a tengu can do some great applied dps, same for golem. And when TE/TC will affect missiles (they're working on that) it'll even get better. Note that, for instance, a Caracal with hams applies more dps than that same caracal with heavies, even to frigates. The "unguided" red headed stepchilds of yesteryear are now the stars of the show. Learn to adapt and stop using hyperbole.

HML Tengu still works just fine too.

Your Subs, Fitting and skills will shift the numbers around a little, but you can expect to do around 550-650dps @ 70-90km
CN Ammo doing less dps over a longer range, where Furies do more dps over a shorter range

Precision ammo melts tackle-frigates at upto 45km .. a target painter and or stasis webifier reduce the volleys needed
and as a bonus the painter works equally well for CN/Fury ammo on Medium to Large targets too Cool

no, it's not as much dps or as much range as before
but it's still very usable

precision was mostly useless before the patch, its not wasted cargospace anymore

for the OP .. both are equally good
train both for the guristas ships Big smile
