The NEW All-in-One Exploration Frigates

One of the features in Retribution that seems to be overlooked is the attempt by CCP to make exploration easier for new players by means of the T1 Scanning Frig overhaul. Now, these ships are still somewhat fragile, tight on fittings, and will rely on their drones for quite a bit of their DPS, but I think they're worth looking at, particularly for new players.

Now certainly, this is not a cheap ship with the faction probe launcher. But since you're out there competing for sites, you'll need to scan as effectively as possible. EHP for this fit (at all 5s and tanked for Guristas) is quite robust at 6868, all while orbiting cans, wrecks and NPCs at 1012 m/s. Light missiles are an option, but given that newer players will probably struggle to keep their Hobgobs alive, I'd imagine they'll want to keep fights closer to the drone bay so to speak. The drone bays are large enough to accommodate either salvaging drones or replacements for your dead light combat drones.

Not sure how this would fair in a 1/10 and I suspect a 2/10 would be a Bridge Too Far, but certainly high sec radars (which are still quite profitable, particularly to the newer players who'll be flying ships like these) and mag sites (provided you dock up to fit Salvager/Analyzer which would be carried in your cargo).

Your thoughts? Other fits? This post is merely meant to get the conversation rolling and perhaps inspire or guide new explorers.

I think new players will lack some of the support skills needed to fly that fit. I do like it the idea though...

Hell, I'm just glad that most or all of the exploration frigates now actually have enough slots to fit all of the exploration requisite modules (probe launcher, salvager, codebreaker, analyzer) at one time. The Magnate's single mid slot was an affront to common sense.

I've been trying out Exploration with the new frigates. They seem to work pretty good though I really have no frame of reference as I never used them for exploration BEFORE now.

As far as I can see, advantage goes to the Gallente Imicus and its 20 Mbit drone bandwidth.

MEDS

Salvager X 2

DRONES

Hobgoblin X 4, Hammerhead X 2 (or 4 more Hobgoblins, or 4 Salvage Drones if you want more salvage in your ship so you can salvage while you ship)

The Heron posted probably does more damage with the launchers + drones of course, but at least this way you don't have to dock up to switch modules.... I dunno if that's a big advantage or not.

I did a 2/10 Rogue Drone plex in this, haven't yet found another DED plex to test again. Found some invention or industry reagent or somesuch worth 4 million isk from something I hacked in another site.....peanuts I guess for most players but it felt pretty good for me anyways.

While that's true, I did denote that this is a modest skill point build. I just thought I'd get the discussion going though and so, the fit somewhat serves as that. It's a starting point for debate really.

I'm just super envious that their T2 equivalents are not underpowered. I'd love to rig and T2 fit a Buzzard and try diving into low-sec or a wormhole, solo, but they just ain't got the slots or the drone bay for that.

What's the expected time frame for CCP to get around to buffing the T2 frigates? 12 months?

I am really enjoying this thing. Found a Sansha 4/10 and cobbled together a Cyclone out of whatever I could find in like 8 Stations to complete it. 115mil Repair. Been doin RADAR / Mags and Sansha 2/10's in this thing.

That's a fine build, but if your tank is at all stressed you can easily swap out the EANM IIs for a Therm & EM and get a substantial boost to your tank.

Why would anyone fly this for explo when their skills are at 5?

@ Ryric,

They wouldn't of course, but I was simply stating the EFT numbers as the typical baseline build of "All 5s" (meaning all relevant skills set to 5 in EFT) and with the tank numbers set to reflect Guristas Damage Profiles.

I know but I forwent a couple of points of tank because it has been a year and I can not remember if Rogue Drones Guard Mag / Radar or any other small sites had stuff worth going after.

I love the utility of this ship more then my Cheetah. I can not wait to see what they do with that.

Posted this in my original thread in new citizens, but forgot about this link, so thought I would add it here as well.

I put this together for under 2.5 M Isk and it is fine for me now given my low SP when it comes to fitting. I still only have about 450k SP.

I usually am going up against Sansha because of being around Amarr, so I tried to tailor my resists accordingly.
No extra mid for an analyzer but I keep it in the Cargo hold in case I run across a Mag site. I usually try to keep stuff at range, but I have the leecher for stuff that gets up close. Not the best, but I'm thinking its good practice for an Arbitrator.

I'm going to start dipping my toe into High Sec with stripped down Magnates that I can put together for under 1 Mil Isk.
Hopefully I can add a cloak to that fit eventually.
