Ammo Bays

This was brought up in another thread, and I thought it'd make some interesting discussion.

Where do people stand on the concept for them? Would you like to see them for combat ships to help alleviate cargo bay issues?

By extension, would these allow Crystals for Miners, Probes for Scouts, etc.?

We could also go as far as to say they guarantee 100% drops on Ammunition Bay loaded equipment potentially, making looting ammo off of destroyed foes for use to lob back at their allies a potential usage.

Needs to stay as is. Cargo bay balances. Laser boats have more room for cap charges. None laser boats fill that space with ammo instead.

I was just wondering, in my Maelstrom I actually hit issues because of my 8 guns constantly firing consuming so much ammo. In very prolonged missions I can actually run dry of one of my ammunition types.

Maybe its just a Minmatar thing, since we like to throw lead at stuff until it dies.

I was thinking more pvp situations. I can see the issue in long missions but no way to improve without effecting the pvp side. I would think if you go thru a whole cargo of ammo in one mission you are doing something wrong anyway.

As a note, here's the math for my ship:

8 guns
12,500 bullets to fill my cargo hold to full
Factoring in multiple ammunition types (2-3 types)

That's if I had zero room for looting at all. If I were to save, say, half my cargo space, we're talking 2,000 bullets of any given type at any time.

Maybe its just the Maelstrom that has the issue.

A 800mm Repeating Artillery II holds 120 bullets and fires at 3.25 seconds per shot (max skills, 3 Gyrostabilizer IIs). Therefore, it takes 390 seconds, or 6.5 minutes to empty your guns. Make that 6.666 minutes to account for reload time.

All 8 guns together hold a total of 960 bullets. If you were to only use half your cargo (6250 bullets' worth), you still have 6.5 reloads of ammo to go through. That means 43.4 minutes of continuous fire/reload.

I'm not a big mission runner myself (only ever run two level 4 missions in a badly fit T1-Drake before going and doing something else), but 43 minutes seems like an awfully long time to be running a single mission, especially for a Maelstrom.

Side note: why are you bringing multiple ammo types? Why not just bring the one most suited to the NPCs you'll encounter in the mission?

Holds not big enough for lots of each type of ammo for my mach, and I got tired of having to dock to change ammo.. So, now I just throw a bunch of each type of ammo that I use in my PVE support orca.... fleet assist links AND mobile ammo hold. Nice place to dump the loot my noctis alts picks up as well.

The more I got into the math, the more absurd I realized it is. I bring multiple times to save time mostly and logistical reasons (Oh hey I'm missing more X in my cargo hold instead of Y, I should buy more next time).

Some longer Level 4 missions I've run I have gotten close to running out of ammo, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's down to my skills or such at this point.

That's actually a genius idea, I hadn't considered keeping a salvage ship in an Orca as well as more ammo and boost ability.

1) Back before I parked the mach and went mining, I was farming 5-8 Angel Extravaganzas a day. That is, kill everything but the last guy that completes the mission and unlocks the bonus room. 30-35 mins to run, 18 million ISK in bounties, another 15 million ISK or so in base loot salvage, and then average maybe another 3 million in the implant (say, a 10M isk implant 1/4 of the time, 1 million 1/4th, and junk half the time).

I'd undock, run half a dozen, with my naotic alt bringing me extra ammo from the orca as he goes to drop off loot.

2) Why more than one ammo type? Once having farmed all my AE's, I'd be travel around between 6-8 systems seeing what missions I'd get offered. Pull several off 3 or 4 alts, then go run them. Wouldn't want to have to reload between running different missions against different rats.


A hard core missioner is not working out of one station, working for one agent, running whatever mission we're offered next. We're bouncing around between multiple accounts, visiting multiple stations in multiple systems, pulling just teh prime missions, and pulling them in batches so that as soon as the shooter finishes shooting, he warps right to the next mission with minimal travel time. Travel time is an isk/hour killer!
