My Mining - am I doing it wrong or could I be doing it better?

Greetings,

I was reading some MD posts and got to thinking about my own modis operendi and if I was indeed doing it correctly or simply could do it better. Lately profits are up and ISK is flowing better than pre-inferno, but maybe I am not getting the most ISKies for my effort, so I turn to the experts - you, the experts of MD... well ok, just outside opinions on mass and see if there is a brilliant consensus maybe...hehe.

Anyway, my stats are:

HS miner - staying here for now, so consider that a factor and yes I know it's better in low and null, the point being HS is where I am staying atm and so making the most of it is what this post is about not comparison with low and null - lets get that out of the way right off.

Mack/solo.

Veld/Scor/Pyro/Kern are what I have options of and I mine it all, end-to-end, ice is an option a few out but I don't need it for a POS so it would be solo ice mining for profit and it seems I can do much better with ore than ice as it is.

I did very well with just doing Veldspar right after the patch, it mined fast and sold well, after a bit I went back to the 4x HS types and just strip mined.

I tend to stockpile and then sell of when the markets are good or when I need spare ISKies, operations expenses are minimal so I can always take time to find points of good margin.

I don't currently salvage my wrecks, but I may start to do so once Retribution hits with salvage drones - since I can do this within the same time I am mining and start to pile into rigs again on the side, I have already started some basic industry again and that seems to be something I will get more into at least for self use in the near future.

I have R&D agents working with LPs for the best returned DCs on the regional markets.

... and i am capable of beating up small kids around my area for lunch money to PLEX with, very important.

Am I missing anything or should I have done something different? to be a billion/trillion ISK ore-baron?

Well your first problem is that you are mining at all.... Blink

So I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you mining correctly? Sure. Are you mining in the most effective way possible? No really.

You shouldn't be stripping fields with no regard for type if you are trying to maximize isk per hour. Google the app "Isk per hour" (imaginatively named) and there is a tab on there that will tell you what to mine based on your api dump and current prices.

For example, for me, Fiery Kernite is at the top and would yield 23.5M isk per hour. Veldspar is 19th on the list and would yield 15.5M- 34% lower is per hour - so why would I want to mine it? Now if your goal is hoard minerals (because you are refining right) then you could hold the Veld (or mineral output) until market prices swing on Trit but then you have the opportunity cost of not mining Kernite right now.

Ice is nothing but AFK fodder at this point. the market is completely tanked and I would only mine it if I wanted to be AFK for 58 out of 60 minutes in an hour (and probably still not even then).

In all, you have to ask yourself "why do I mine?". If the answer is short term isk then you need to mine what is hot and turn it over while the market is hot. If it's long term speculation then it can be anything but expect to have to sit on a lot of it until the time is right.

You are already doing datacores. Might be an idea to skill for PI as well. It's profitable even if you do it in hisec and you can remotely set your extractors while you are filling your ore hold in a belt in a completely different system.
Station trading is another activity I do. Again with skills you can do this remotely while mining as long as you have the skills for that and are in the same region.

Another thing: Eve is an MMO. If you are mining solo, you are doing it wrong. Join a corporation that has regular mining fleets with bonusses or talk to another miner in your belt and see if you can join his fleet.

MMO means there are a lot of other people in the game at the same time, not that you have to do anything with them.

As others have said, if your goal is to just make more isk, you can branch out on activities. I think mining is one of the slowest ways to build up isk, but if you enjoy it, then go for it.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

Hey,

Thanks for that info on ISK - downloaded it, it's a great tool, wish I had known that one earlier.

Any other tools like that:

I have/or have tried:
EFT/PYFT
EVEmeep - which doesn't work for me on my PC for some reason
EVEmon - which I haven't really need or use in a while

Test server for fitting and PvP testing, etc... Dualtiy and Buckingham are both setup.

I would love some corp management tools if they have them for getting a starter corp going.

Mining is good reliable return for low effort.

If you're in HiSec because your RL means a low intensity game play then I would suggest that is valid.

For myself, I flip around based on what I feel like at the time. But I mostly mine if I need *really* low intensity play (Ie, doing dishes at the same time or I'm putting together yet another eve spread sheet).

"ISK per hour" is a good app and changed what I choose to mine. (Not to mention replaced my build price calc spread sheet).

I also keep an eye on how much I'm pulling in on each mining cycle in order not to waste the full 3 minutes if the roid will deplete before the cycle finishes.

I know most will scoff at the miners as there is much better isks to have but for me it is what you are up for at the time.
