Freighters to support mining ops?

As per the 30th of November dev blog, Freighters will become able to jettison cargo and take cargo from jetcans. I don't remember when the dev blog said it would occur, so not necessarily on December 4th, but if not then soon'ish after that.

How will this affect mining ops?

My guess is; not much.

It'll cut down hauling a little, and the secondary assistant - the first assistent sitting in an Orca giving perma-bonus - can be a Freighter pilot instead of a secondary Orca pilot, so some new people can now contribute to mining ops, who before would have been limited to haulage in the 35k to 40k m3 range which means constant activity. With a 980k m3 Charon, or even a low-skill puny-cargo non-Caldari Freighter, the op hauler can spend most of the time AFK.

It's also noteworthy that the Freighters still can't fit any modules, so the Orca will have to do the jetcan tractoring for the Freighter.

If someone brings a freighter into a belt, he'd better have his mining permit ready or it might just happen that he won't leave it again Lol

I suspect if people are willing to risk a freighter in a belt, they'll use it. Being able to leave the orca for boosts full time would be handy for smaller corp ops, or even just multiboxed grav sites or something.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

For serious mining, I just don't see how it's useful without a tractor beam.

In the future it could be useful to have a freighter on grid. Keep in mind warfare links are changing and it is still uncertain whether mining links will change with the same mechanics.

If mining links are required to be on grid I could see a set up with an orca perma boosting and tractoring and a freighter hauling.

Think of it this way: if you're using a booster AND an orca to haul, you now get an extra miner with about 80% uptime. Orca pilot can mine away in a hulk, then once you fill up 30 cans of ore, go grab the freighter :)

If you don't keep on devblogs or read the first sentence of the OP why post? It has been announced that freighters will be able to scoop from jetcans in space.

A freighter costs less then an Orca + mining foremen mindlink implant, and this is a pretty common setup for any mining op.

For ore mining I can't really see this being very useful. Sure if you have a mining op with 10 + miners you can easily keep your orca boosting in belt and just have a frighter sitting beside it scopping out of the corp hangar (if this is allowed now too) or have the orca tractor in and the freighter scoop up.

But with ice mining? Man, that is going to be pretty nice. The level of laziness this will offer is amazing. You'll be able to go like 5 hours without having to do anything besides drag from mackinaw to a jetcan with 1 ammo in it (to keep it spawned in place) and then drag from jetcan to freighter.

20 Mackinaws sitting around a freighter getting orca boosts will fill up the frighter every 40 minutes, and only requiring you to drag / drop ice to a jetcan every what, 28 minutes? This will also yield around 170m isk/hour. Every 20 minutes drag / drop. every 40 minutes, haul to station, fly back to belt.

The big multi boxing miners are going to love this. Bots even more.

Freighters are too easily ganked. Too slow to warp. A gank camp of 10 ships shows up and there is no hope of escape period.

Bad, bad idea. And if you see Icers using one.....please go for it. PLEASE.

Having re-read though the dev blog it would seem everyone (including myself) missed this very important line in the dev blog.

So they cannot scoop up "assembled containers" (not sure if jet cans fall into this category or not) but they CAN jettison a freighter container, which according to the wiki General Freight Container is 120,000m3 containers.

So a freighter can fly out the mining op (ice or ore) unload a few 120,000m3 containers and warp out. Once they are full it flies back in and scoops them up.

And yes obviously you have to worry about can flippers (27,500m3 every 2 minutes) but this is only an issue if you mine where this type of thing is a problem. The ability to lay out 850,000m3 + of cans to mine into is going to make big mining ops very interesting.

Can Flipping? not with the new Criminal flags. That criminal would be fair game to all the pilots there. A frig flipping a can could get munched by all the drones a fleets of miners could throw at him. 10 miners...50 hob2's. bye bye flipper.

The wording is odd in the patch notes, is a freighter now able to access another ship's corp hangar out in space?
