I have a set of ultra edition of HP minatar headphone and mic.

The head band snapped so its head together with a peice of metal, screws and of course duct tape.

coming from a bit of a hi fi enthusiast. no headset is worth the gaming mark up it gets. check out the frequency range it has. 20 -20 000 is the usual range for all of these headsets and too be honest its kinda weak. you'll find this range on $60 headsets to $250 headsets. and since they all have the same frequency range, they are all pretty much the same. (save some extra bass effect which will actually only come from the shape and design of the actual ear muff that sits over your ear.)

if the seller doesnt show specs such as frequency range, i wouldnt buy it.

7.1 in a headset is a massive overkill since you're trying to fit 7 separate drivers in a single ear cup. any surround sound in a headset is actually overkill and to me sounds like crap.

you will still here noise in front and behind you with a stereo headset.

"diminishing returns" is a phrase widely used when buying any type of speaker because generally you end up spending way more money for a little difference.

Anything with the word gaming in the title is over priced and a waste of money, get yourself a good set of headphones and a desktop microphone, or one that can clip onto your monitor or top.

I have had several £100+ headsets, ranging from Razer to Logitech, yet nothing compares to my current Sneisenner or however the **** you spell it headset and a £20 desktop microphone, clarity and qaulity not made of cheap Chinese manufactured plastic that snaps when you drop it, or breaks when it inevitably gets caught around the wheels of death.

I do love Sennhieser also I had a very nice set of headphones a few years back. I think expanding the discussion to Microphone options as well sounds like a good idea. Back to the original post I do require noise canalization due to the excessive fans in my house.

I recently got the Cooler Master Storm Sirius , real 5.1 not virtual (although I probably couldn't tell the difference). No complaints with it so far.

Wired, usb or 3.5 connections means it can cause conflicts if you have a onboard sound or a dedicated card though.

I used the razer carcharias when I was on a PC and thought they were good for the price. Very comfortable and well designed. (They seemd to last too unlike some of their mice).

I'm currently using an iMac to play eve and due to recent complaints about the quality of my inbuilt mic I spent a while shopping for a new headset. Then I realised I had a jawbone era lying around. I've hooked that up and can't believe I hadn't thought of it earlier. Great quality, very good noise cancellation, and obviously lighter and more comfortable than a 'normal' headset for voice comms. If you want headphones and mic then go for it, just sayin' a good bluetooth headset can also do the job.

Using Razer's Carcharas as I type...

It is wired (well a cloth covered cable) but it's impressively long and more importantly the sound quality is very good, and even more importantly, the headset is the only comfortable one I've managed to find! Since I wear glasses, most headphone sets just squish my ears after a bit of wearing them, and I hate the inner ear type. Anyway, just pointing out, if you wear glasses, you'll love these. If not, well carry on and good luck whatever you end up with =)

I got Platronics 780 and they are absolutely AMAZING.

Recently bought a pair of the 780's, but I wouldn't consider them amazing. First, the over-ear cushions are shaped for a square ear; my ears aren't square, hence wearing for more than a couple hours at a stretch and the tops of my ears begin to hurt from the constant pressure. Second, they're not noise-cancelling in any way, shape, or form, so sound from outside affects what you're listening to (I often have to turn up the volume to hear over my apartment's heater, which isn't loud).

On the plus side, there's a very nice stereo kind of feature (don't know what it's called), which REALLY enhances stereo sound quality.

But I'm still looking for something comfortable and wireless that can last for upwards of 6 hours at a stretch (when I'm doing my web dev I'm often listening to tunes for hours at a stretch).

I gotta say, I was looking forward to some good suggestions here but its quite clear only the above poster demand the very best fidelity when it somes to audio quality. That is quite sad really.

If your buying anything other then sennheiser your buying the wrong product.

Personally I hate headsets with mics attached. I go for proper headfones and a seperate mic.

QFT. But i prefer having a headset mic. Got a set of PC 330's they are hands down the best headfones ive ever owned. Great sound quality for music and games.

Dont get fooled into getting digital 7.1/5.1 systems and they distort sound in a way that its creators never intended (usually ending up with a worse effect) and even the true 5.1 headsets never have the quality of driver that a good stereo set has. With the limited space available in a headset you really dont need to be going for any kind of surround sound regardless if marketing teams say it will help you "pinpoint enemys" because it wont do any better than a good stereo set.

Those must have cost a fortune. Do you have discount store you can get them from? I'm afraid they may be out of my budget if not.

Denon headphones plus random decent quality separate table mic. When looking for headphones, use a heavy bass and high pitch rich dubstep (although i dont like dubstep) in the store to determine good / bad. When searching for mine, I had in the store Denon, Sennheiser, AKG and some other headphone stands. With some MT Eden and other dubstep songs to test, Denon beat every other heaphone by many miles in similar price range (and yes, including Sennheiser). I have had Sennheisers in the past, they were OK but Denon is just better at reproducing all kinds of sounds from speech to classical music. Have had these Denons that cost around 100 eur for 2 years now, one of the best peripherial purchases ive made in my life.

Denons appear to have great quality but also at a significant price.

I had a dual ear headset with attached mic from radioshack that worked great except.

On warm days it was like wearing a set of ear muffs, not something you want to do in a hot climate.

Now I just use a single ear headset with mic attached.
It weighs nothing and it doesn't make you sweat and feel like you are wearing a helmet all day.
Besides it means you can listen to comms in one ear and something else in the other.

Oh but I have to admit I run comms on a seperate computer then the game.
Best use for an old computer.

That way game sounds (yes I know leave it alone) don't overpower what you are trying to listen too.

The whole point of headsets to begin with was to block out external sounds but when it comes to computers they pipe everything over the same channel, makes zero sense and defeats the purpose.

And yes a simple wire cheap headset works just fine.

now that this topic is around here, i m currently on a phase of leaving all the wires away, so i was wondering, which technology you guys think is best for a set of wireless headphones? bluetooth, RF or IR?

that and wondering if any of you has any set that powers the transmitter via USB and gets the audio from the audio output jack of the sound card.

i was thinking one of these:
Sennheiser RS110
or
Rocketfish RF-WHP01
or
Sony MDRRF925RK

I used Razer Barracuda with my PC(5.1). Loved them till I switched to Mac. I used the built in mic for output and the headphones for input, even in 2.1 they sounded good, but couldn't get the mic to work worth ****.

Well, I meant LX-3000s but I buy them because they're durable and cheap enough that I can just buy another one if something happens (and some of those expensive headsets are goddamned frail)

I aint no audio buff, I did post here a page back.

Just a guide I follow when buying headphones, avoid anything with a Gaming tag or rating from a gaming magazine/website, they are overpriced and not worth it.

The worse being, already mentioned is the Logitech Barracudas and Razer Caracacegrghefnf whatever the **** they are called. Had both, terrible and waste of money. I have had some Saitek £30 headsets as well, which btw were still completely and utterly crap BUT the microphone was miles better than my £100 Barracudas and cost 1/4 the price.

Much like mountain biking, avoid things like "Mens windproof, water proof, thermal insulated mountain biking gloves" cost double the price of the ones you get out of outdoor shops.

I beleive my current set is Sennheiser HD 518, not home atm so cant remember. Cost me about £70 or so, sturdy as ****, strong cable and good noise cancellation.
